No results found.Annual fish production in the Kyrgyz Republic (or Kyrgyzstan) has fallen significantly since independence in 1991. In 1991, fish production (inland and aquaculture) was estimated at more than 1 361 tonnes. By 2006, it had decreased to 71 tonnes. In the same period, more than 90 percent of state fish farms were privatized as part of the economic changes that followed the breakup of the former Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. In February 2007, the Government of Kyrgyzstan, throug h the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Processing Industry (MAWRPI), requested FAO to provide technical assistance for the sustainable development and management of the fishery sector in the country. FAO, through its European Community (EC)/FAO facility for consultancy services, approved Project GCP/GLO/162/EC – Kyrgyzstan – “Development of inland fisheries and aquaculture in the Kyrgyz Republic to reduce rural food insecurity”. This FAO Fisheries Circular has two main ai ms. First, it is intended to inform those interested in fisheries and aquaculture in Kyrgyzstan about the current situation with regard to fishery resources and their utilization in the country. Second, it attempts to provide an example of a consultative and participatory policy framework development process, which might be of use also for other countries in transition in the Central Asian region. The documents presented here are considered as final versions and cleared as such by the Department of Fisheries (DOF) of the MAWRPI. The documents are also available in Russian language from the DOF in Bishkek. The Review of capture Fisheries and aquaculture in the Kyrgyz Republic is presented in Part I of this Fisheries Circular. Part II contains the final version of the Strategy for fisheries and aquaculture sector development and management in the Kyrgyz Republic (2008–2012). -

No results found.The Fifth Session of the Central Asian and Caucasus Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in the period 10-12 October 2016. The following four countries attended the Session as members of the Commission: Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkey. Georgia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan attended the Session as observers. The Commission agreed to maintain its administrative budget at USD 180 000 for the years 2016 and 2017. The Commission, having a dopted 11 recommendations, guidelines and better management practices for inland fisheries and aquaculture in its first four sessions (2011-2015), monitored the progress made with implementation of these decisions in the region. The outcome of the monitoring exercise was that the guidelines and recommendations adopted are very relevant and that most are actively being implemented by the countries. The Commission decided to allocate more funds to implementation of its 2nd Regional Work Programme (2016-2020). Priorities for 2017 and 2018 include, amongst others: habitat rehabilitation for inland fisheries, methodologies for inland fisheries stocks assessments, development of best practices for cage aquaculture in reservoirs and lakes, capacity building of small-scale fishers, and training for the establishment of national fisheries and aquaculture data and information management systems. -

No results found.The Regional Workshop on Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture in Central Asia: Status and Development Prospects (Beymelek, Demre, Antalya, Turkey, 11–14 December 2007) was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Turkey (MARA), the Turkish International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and FAO, and held at the Mediterranean Fisheries Research, Production and Training Institute (AKSAM). In cooperation with the country participants, the Workshop aimed to elaborate the basis for a joint MARA, FAO and TICA strategic programme for fisheries and aquaculture development in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The Regional Workshop was attended by 35 participants from the five Central Asian countries, MARA and TICA representatives, university professors from various universities in Turkey, private-sector representatives, as well as MARA and FAO resource persons. Outcomes of the meeting were, inter alia, the exchange among representatives of the Central Asian countries of experiences on fisheries and aquaculture development constraints and opportunities, and increased awareness on the common goals to increase sustainable development of the sector and on the need for regional collaboration in fisheries and aquaculture.
