No results found.This document contains the report of, and the paper presented at, the FAO Regional Workshop on the Elaboration of National Plans of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing – Southern and East Africa Subregion, held at Kariba, Zimbabwe, from 24 to 28 November 2003. The purpose of the Workshop was to assist countries in the southern and eastern Africa region to develop capacity so that they would be better placed to elaborate national plans of a ction to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (NPOAs–IUU). The Workshop addressed the International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IPOA–IUU) in detail and the Technical Guideline that had been developed to support the implementation of the IPOA–IUU; two case studies; decisionmaking about IUU fishing and skills development through identification of key issues relating to the NPOA–IUU, the vehicle through which the IPOA–IUU will be implemented by countries. Working groups were formed to encourage maximum participation. A review of regional fishery issues was discussed including ways of improving collaboration and identifying regional priorities. The document prepared by Ms J. Swan entitled “National plans to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing: models for coastal and small-island developing states” was funded through FishCode Programme component projects G CP/INT/849/USA (“Support for the Implementation of the International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing”) with Trust Fund support from the Government of the United States of America, and GCP/INT/823/JPN (“Responsible Fisheries for Small Island Developing States (SIDS)”) with Trust Fund support from the Government of Japan. -

No results found.A food systems approach is acknowledged to be key to efforts to combat obesity and eliminate other forms of malnutrition in the countries of FAO’s Near East and North Africa Region (NENA) and WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Region. A two-day regional multi-stakeholder consultation workshop, entitled Leveraging Food Systems to Combat Obesity in the Near East and North Africa Region, held in Cairo on 23-24 September 2019, brought together a range of stakeholders to discuss food systems for healthy and sustainable diets. The workshop identified a series of conclusions and recommendations, with a strong emphasis on the need for multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder approaches. It is also clear that close cooperation and networking between Member States is important, in collaboration with FAO, WHO and UNICEF and other international partner organizations. Robust policy responses, many of which have already been agreed internationally, are needed to transform food systems, create healthy food environments and ensure access to healthy, sustainable diets for all. The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition 2016 - 2025 presents a key opportunity to focus political attention on these efforts. Key challenges that were identified include a lack of leadership and of coordination, undue influence of vested interests, difficulties in convincing other sectors and actors of their relevance and/or role, a lack of infrastructure and investment, as well as addressing long-term health challenges in a crisis context. Support needs expressed included support to develop clear argumentation on the social and economic case for action and technical support from FAO/WHO to help countries

It aims to raise awareness about existing AI applications in agriculture and to inspire stakeholders to develop and replicate the new ones. Improvement of capacity and tools for capturing and processing data and substantial advances in the field of machine learning open new horizons for data-driven solutions that can support decision-making, facilitate supervision and monitoring, improve the timeliness and effectiveness of safety measures (e.g. use of pesticides), and support automation of many resource-consuming tasks in agriculture. This publication presents the reader with a collection of informative applications highlighting various ways AI is used in agriculture and offering valuable insights on the implementation process, success factors, and lessons learnt.
