No results found.Globally, rural populations, heavily reliant on agriculture for their sustenance, are disproportionately affected by poverty. In order to meet the global poverty reduction and food security objectives of the SDGs, measures addressing their unique constraints are needed to enable them to actively engage in a beneficial process of agricultural growth and rural transformation. Zambia and Timor-Leste, the two target countries, have been grappling with persistent rural poverty, with high proportions of their populations living below the poverty line. COVID-19 exacerbated these challenges by disrupting agricultural markets, limiting mobility and shrinking income opportunities in rural areas. Strengthening coherence between social protection and agricultural interventions is critical not only for responding to the immediate challenges posed by COVID 19 but also for laying the basis for more inclusive economic development and resilience-building pathways in the medium and long term. This requires strengthening the institutional linkages between social protection and agricultural interventions, and the systems and human capacities required to manage these linkages. Against this background, the subprogramme supported the implementation of two programmes that involved the joint delivery of social protection and agriculture support – one in Timor Leste and one in Zambia. -

No results found.Lebanon is currently facing a critical food security crisis. Its food system, meanwhile, faces multiple challenges, including fragmented land, reliance on imported agricultural inputs, inefficient water use and outdated infrastructure. These issues are exacerbated by an ongoing water crisis, as well as public health concerns such as cholera and hepatitis outbreaks. Given the region’s heavy dependence on agriculture, these factors significantly heighten its vulnerability. Over 1.05 million individuals – including Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian refugees – experiencing acute food insecurity, placing them in Phase 3 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). This number is expected to rise to 1.65 million by March 2025.In this context, the Government of Switzerland has provided funds for FAO to develop a project document, which focuses on addressing a range of challenges affecting food security in Lebanon. The project formulated aims to tackle the country’s urgent food security challenges by promoting integrated water resource management, enhancing agricultural practices and strengthening the livelihoods of vulnerable small-scale farmers and workers. -

No results found.In the Lao People's Democratic Republic, 80 percent of the rural population are subsistence farmers. Stronger agriculture systems are essential for the country to attain food and nutrition security, reduce poverty, and achieve the government’s vision of a developing country of upper-middle income with innovative, green and sustainable economic growth by 2030. The country’s agriculture sector is exposed to multiple risks: climatic, biological and economic. Flood, drought and storm are the most prevalent natural hazards, and are expected to become more intense and more frequent with climate change. Vulnerability of agriculture systems in the country is driven by a number of factors, including geographically scattered production due to the country’s topography and weak linkages to urban populations and regional markets; and a heavy dependency of the population on agriculture and natural resources as a source of employment, income and food, among others. Against this background, the project sought to enhance resilience to climate-related disasters and environmental sustainability of agriculture systems and livelihoods in three districts of Attapeu Province, one of the most marginalized and remote provinces in the country.
