Synopsis (short abstract) This publication introduces the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats' Network (RSN), its foundation by FAO, its role and developments, as well as its members and partners from around the world. The FAO RSN Secretariat develops this publication following the advice of COFI 32 on the needed of visibility to the work of the RSN as well as its members, the regional fishery bodies (RFBs) and regional fishery management organizations (RFMOs); and considering the increasing importance of these actors in regional cooperation and, in the international agenda, for delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This publication offers a map of the RSN membership, and a short presentation and general overview of the current 58 RSN members, including references to their members, mandate, area of competence and species.

    Forty-three secretaries of regional fisheries bodies, with diverse mandates and from all geographic regions, including FAO and non-FAO regional fisheries bodies, marine and inland fishery advisory and management bodies, the UNDOALOS and invited organizations, participated in the Seventh Meeting of the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats’ Network. Discussions covered major subjects of regional concern, comprising the activities and outcomes from UNGA and UNDOALOS, the UN discussion process on Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, the implementation of activities in delivering the 2030 Agenda, the experience of RFBs initiatives, the cooperation of regional bodies and Fisheries and Resources Monitoring Systems, the 33rd Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI 33) related matters and global processes and subjects relevant to RFBs and RFMOs, and the state of progress to strengthen the RSN, including current needs and challenges. The RSN Chair’s Statement, delivered at the COFI 33, is annexed to this report. The meeting had a high level of participation that underlined the role of the Network as a unique forum to foster cooperation, facilitate discussion and exchange of experiences. It noted the increased interest in the international agenda on the role of RFBs as key players in translating international and global policies into practice at the regional and local levels.

    Thirty-four secretaries participated in the meeting representing regional fisheries bodies with diverse mandates and from all geographic regions, including FAO and non-FAO regional fisheries bodies, and marine and inland fishery advisory and management bodies. RSN-6 discussions covered several subjects, including conservation and the sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, the Assistance Fund provided under Part VII of the 1995 Agreement for the Imp lementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, issues related to the functioning and performance of regional fisheries bodies, and the consolidation and development of the RSN. Background documents to support discussions are annexed to this report, including the RSN Chair’s Statement that was delivered at the 32nd Session of the Committee on Fisheries. The meeting provided a unique forum to foster cooperation among regional fisheries bodies established acr oss oceans and inland waters of the world.
