Synopsis (short abstract) The agriculture sector, dominated by the banana industry, continues to play a major role in the economy of Saint Lucia, however, for a range of reasons, including changes in the European Union import preference regime, the effects of global climate change and other environmental events, its importance has declined in recent years. Recognizing the need to boost agricultural production, the Government of Saint Lucia has taken considerable measures to revive the banana industry and to address the current and future risks to agriculture posed by climate change. As part of Saint Lucia’s Sectoral Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan for the Agriculture Sector 2018 – 2028 (Agriculture SASAP), the government presented its plan to build adaptive capacity to climate variability in the agriculture sector. Furthermore, in the 2016 – 2021 Agricultural Policy Framework and Strategy, the government established an objective of increasing employment and economic growth in the agricultural sector through the adoption of productivity-enhancing technologies and the sustainable use of natural resources.

    Agriculture is a major pillar of the economy in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, although its importance has declined in recent years. The agricultural sector continues to be export-driven and has diversified from mainly exporting bananas to several types of commodities, such as root crops and tubers, coconuts and plantains. The commitment to growth in traditional crop sectors, such as arrowroot and bananas, remains a primary focus in the reduction of poverty and the creation of opportunities for improved livelihoods. In 2013, the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines published the “National Economic and Social Development Plan 2013 to 2025” with the purpose of increasing market access for agricultural produce, and for which the first strategic intervention is to develop and maintain an effective information and market intelligence system.

    Fiji is a small island state, which is vulnerable to the effect of climate change, natural disasters and consequently, economic shocks As Fiji’s large rural population is highly dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods, it is crucial that the government has detailed information on the composition and structure of the agriculture sector to assist with planning and responding to these events Prior, little and irregular information is collected or disseminated to agriculture sector stakeholders, limiting the capacity to develop evidence based policies and strategies Low resource availability for follow up agriculture surveys, in addition to staff changes, has meant a loss of knowledge of the census methodology and databases, and data for monitoring progress in the agriculture sector and against the SDGs is also lacking or not always reliable As such, the government has committed to an ambitious programme of agricultural development under the Fiji 2020 Agriculture Sector Policy Agenda.

    Around one quarter of the population of Pakistan lives below the national poverty line and 3.9 percent below the international poverty line of USD 1.90/day. Approximately one tenth of the population is undernourished, 15.9 percent of households are moderately or severely food insecure, and 2.4 percent of households are severely food insecure. Pakistan is also faced by a very high level of malnutrition among children and women of reproductive age. The agriculture sector accounts for 19.3 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, with contributions from livestock (60.6 percent), crops (35.2 percent), fisheries (2.1 percent) and forestry (2.1 percent). Besides its significance to the economy, the agriculture sector is pivotal for domestic food availability and self-sufficiency. However, the sector is endangered by such natural disasters as floods, droughts, earthquakes and landslides; a recent locust outbreak was another threat to agriculture production and food security in the country.
