Book (series)Investing in trade digitalization: the case of ePhyto 2025
Also available in:
No results found.Global trade in plants and plant products is rapidly expanding – more than doubling in some cases – and set to grow another 11 percent by 2032. Yet, many countries still employ mostly manual rather than electronic means for issuing the phytosanitary certificates required to trade goods internationally. Relying on paper slows applications for and delivery of these certificates. They are not easily corrected when last-minute changes must be made and can be lost, causing days-long delays at border crossings, jeopardizing the freshness of highly perishable goods and increasing refrigeration needs. This – together with transporting printed certificates to and from customs offices – increases greenhouse gas emissions. Electronic phytosanitary certificates – ePhytos – are easier to use, cheaper, safer and more responsive to changing circumstances. They speed up exports, increasing trade between countries. This report examines how the ePhyto solution can facilitate the export trade of four countries where the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) operates: Serbia, Egypt, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. It is part of the Directions in Investment series under the FAO Investment Centre's Innovation and Knowledge for Investment (IK4I) programme. -
Book (series)Zero-deforestation commitments: A new avenue towards enhanced forest governance?
Forestry Working Paper 3
2018Also available in:
No results found. The zero-deforestation movement has gained considerable momentum as governments and companies enter into commitments to curb deforestation. The most innovative are multi-stakeholder initiatives, where governments and international organi- zations have joined with the private sector and civil society organizations in making commit- ments to reduce deforestation. These pledges have created opportunities for improved forest governance by envisaging the private sector at the centre of the movement. They have also encouraged a broader understanding of the drivers and and consequences of deforestation, and how these can be more realistically addressed. -
Book (stand-alone)Guide on digital agricultural extension and advisory services
Use of smartphone applications by smallholder farmers
2023Also available in:
No results found.Digital agricultural extension and advisory services (AEAS) have a great potential to enhance accessibility, delivery, transparency, scope and impacts of information and services for smallholder farmers. However, this potential is often unfully harnessed and the benefits of digital AEAS unequally distributed due to an evident, widening digital divide between rural and urban areas, gender, and different social groups both within and among regions. Due to low-level e-literacy and digital skills, particularly smallholder farmers in rural areas in developing countries have limited access to and utilization of digital AEAS. Considering the above-mentioned benefits of digital AEAS, their poor uptake by smallholder farmers, and the importance of digital empowerment of smallholder farmers in particular, this guide, targeting smallholder farmers in need of digital AEAS as its principal users, provides a set of tools to enhance their digital skills in terms of basic knowledge and skills on using digital tools, methods of access to digital AEAS, methods of access to e-commerce, and capacity building.
