Synopsis (short abstract) Fish and fish products are crucial in the nutrition and livelihoods of the Myanmar people. However, little information is available on their patterns of consumption, inter-regional differences, availability and types of fish consumed. Myanmar has impressive freshwater capture fisheries. The aquatic resource area of the river systems within Myanmar encompasses a total of 8.2 million ha of permanent and seasonal water bodies. These resources support, in many ways, the livelihoods of the people of Myanmar. Myanmar has a long coastline of nearly 3 000 km and coastal aquaculture contributes significant export earnings and shows potential for future development and diversification. This report is the outcome of two concurrent missions, one to coastal areas and one to inland areas. The report includes the findings of the missions as well as conclusions and recommendations in support of the long-term sustainability of fishery resources in Myanmar.

    The international symposium on ‘Building a sustainable future for inland fisheries and aquaculture in a time of multiple stressors’ was organized on 7–9 October 2024 in conjunction with the Thirty-second Session of EIFAAC in Pula, Croatia. The symposium was hosted by the Government of Croatia and the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture. The symposium was attended by 120 participants from 24 countries. The main documentation comprised 5 invited papers, 50 experience papers and 23 posters.The symposium had eight major themes, which were: 1) Stock assessment and freshwater fish management; 2) Developments and challenges in freshwater aquaculture; 3) Migratory fishes – problems and conservation; 4) Freshwater invasives networking for strategy (FINS III); 5) Exploring the use of artificial intelligence in inland fisheries and aquaculture; 6) Climate change and impacts on inland waters, fisheries and aquaculture; 7) Innovative management for conservation of freshwater areas and aquatic biodiversity and advances in recreational fisheries research and management; and 8) Citizen science and socio-economic aspects of freshwater fishery and aquaculture.This EIFAAC Occasional Paper presents the proceedings of the symposium.The thirty-second session of EIFAAC, held in Pula, Croatia, on 9–11 October 2024, endorsed the conclusions and recommendations of the symposium.

    The international symposium on “Inland Fisheries and aquaculture: advances in technology, stock assessment and citizen science in an era of climate change” was organized in conjunction with the thirty-first session of the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission in Killarney, Ireland on 20–21 June 2022. The symposium was organized by Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications. The symposium was attended by 105 participants from 14 countries. The main documentation comprised six invited papers and 35 experience papers and 15 posters. The symposium had five major themes, which were: (i) Inland fish stock assessment, (ii) Developments in freshwater fish monitoring technologies with an emphasis on non-destructive methods, (iii) The problems and challenges of climate change and its impacts on inland aquatic resources and fisheries, (iv) Citizen science, and (v) Aquaculture - traditional freshwater systems vs recirculation systems. The symposium provided valuable networking opportunities for the participating scientists, especially young scientists could share their research findings. Many promising studies and innovative technologies and methodologies were presented. This Occasional Paper in conjunction with a special issue of Fisheries Management and Ecology represents the proceedings of the symposium. The thirty-first session of EIFAAC, held in Killarney from 22 to 24 June 2022, discussed and endorsed the conclusions and recommendations from the symposium.
