No results found.Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) is fast becoming a serious threat to the survival of many endangered species in the world. The case studies from countries all over the world demonstrate the severity of the conflict and suggest that greater in depth analysis of the conflict is needed in order to avoid overlooking the problem and undermining the conservation of threatened and potentially endangered species. This report provides an insight into the HWC issue, based on a selection of relevant case stu dies and gathers together the key lessons learned. This is a comprehensive review covering a wide array of the available literature on wild mammal-human conflict, with the exception of human-elephant, written over the last ten years. It highlights common problems and solutions across bio-geographical regions in order to provide a better understanding of the HWC issue worldwide. It also shows that these conflicts have similar causes and impacts, and that accurate and detailed information, scienti fic research and stakeholder commitment are key to the development of appropriate and sustainable strategies for both resolving the problem and conserving different ecosystems and their wildlife inhabitants. -

No results found.Human wildlife conflict (HWC) arises from the competition between growing populations of humans and wildlife for the same declining resources. Such conflict has proved a major issue in northern Zimbabwe. In Hurungwe District in the province of Mashonaland West, common examples of HWC include livestock predation, crop destruction, human attacks and conflict between farmers and protected area management. The resulting damage can impact food security, livelihoods and health. This project aimed to reduce HWC in target areas of Hurungwe by supporting local communities to implement sustainable methods of deterring wildlife and protecting livestock. At the same time, it sought to increase agricultural production and strengthen resilience by managing disease in livestock and promoting alternative livelihood options based on the sustainable, community based management of natural resources . -

No results found.This document is a useful resource meant to answer some of the most basic questions that community members might have on human–wildlife conflict (HWC), including how to prevent it, as well as information about compensation eligibility and processes for when HWC does occur. It was produced by the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programm as part of the Community Conservancy Project in the Kavango–Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier, Conservation Area.The SWM Programme is a major international initiative that aims to improve the conservation and sustainable use of wildlife in forest, savannah and wetland ecosystems. It is funded by the European Union with co-funding from the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD). Projects are being piloted and tested with governments, national partners and communities in 16 participating countries. The initiative is coordinated by a dynamic consortium of four partners, namely the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

No results found.Accurate and consistent information on forest area and forest area change is important given the reporting requirements for countries to access results based payments for REDD+ . Forest area change estimates usually provide data on the extent of human activity resulting in emissions (e.g. from deforestation) or removals (e.g. from afforestation), also called activity data (AD). A basic methodological approach to estimate greenhouse gas emissions and removals (IPCC, 2003), is to multiply AD with a coefficient that quantifies emissions per unit ‘activity’ (e.g. tCO2e per ha), also called an emission factor (EF). -

No results found.FAO provides countries with technical support to conduct nutrition assessments, in particular to build the evidence base required for countries to achieve commitments made at the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) and under the 2016-2025 UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. Such concrete evidence can only derive from precise and valid measures of what people eat and drink. There is a wide range of dietary assessment methods available to measure food and nutrient intakes (expressed as energy insufficiency, diet quality and food patterns etc.) in diet and nutrition surveys, in impact surveys, and in monitoring and evaluation. Differenct indicators can be selected according to a study's objectives, sample population, costs and required precision. In low capacity settings, a number of other issues should be considered (e.g. availability of food composition tables, cultural and community specific issues, such as intra-household distribution of foods and eating from shared plates, etc.). This manual aims to signpost for the users the best way to measure food and nutrient intakes and to enhance their understanding of the key features, strengths and limitations of various methods. It also highlights a number of common methodological considerations involved in the selection process. Target audience comprises of individuals (policy-makers, programme managers, educators, health professionals including dietitians and nutritionists, field workers and researchers) involved in national surveys, programme planning and monitoring and evaluation in low capacity settings, as well as those in charge of knowledge brokering for policy-making.
