The overall objective of the workshop was to raise awareness and support the implementation of the SSF Guidelines in the region. The workshop noted that, across the region, small-scale fisheries contribute to livelihoods, food security, and local and regional economies. There are encouraging developments in the region in relation to legal reforms, strengthening participation of small-scale fisheries actors and co-management approaches. On the other hand, many challenges persist, including heavily exploited fishery resources in coastal area, poo r infrastructure facilities and services, increased risks from disasters and climate change, competition from other sectors ,insufficient operationalization of fisheries management plans and institutionalization of the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) in national fisheries governance frameworks. There is therefore a strong need to move from theory to practice and to link policy and actions in the spirit of the SSF Guidelines. -

No results found. In June 2014, the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) endorsed the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The SSF Guidelines, available as EXCO/17/INF 07, are the first internationally negotiated instrument that deals specifically with small-scale fisheries. Furthermore, the SSF guidelines are also the first negotiated instrument that fully explores the social and economic aspects of fisheries governance. They represent a global consensus on the need for more holistic and integrated approaches to improve the livelihoods of more than 500 million people, a significant portion of which live in the APFIC region.
