    Among many other factors, feed is a limiting factor, which accounts for a major share of the total operational cost of the aquaculture sector in Kyrgyz Republic. This study aims to analyze the value chain of aquafeed sub-sector including their possible constraints and develop a business plan for establishing small-scale aquafeed mill in the Kyrgyz Republic. This is the first post-USSR country case study which assesses the current status of the aquafeed sub-sector, aquafeed value chain, on-farm feeding and feed management practices, performance of different actors in terms of value addition and profitability, and feed regulations, institutions and policies and presents a business plan for small-scale aquafeed in Kyrgyz Republic. The study identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in this sub-sector, and suggests a number of development strategies which would improve the performance of feed industry and farmers’ access to better feeds and ultimately support the development of aquaculture sector in Kyrgyz Republic. Quantitative data analysis result shows that the Kyrgyz aquafeed sub-sector is still in its infancy and its value chain is very simple; including only few actors comprising feed input suppliers, aquafeed producers, aquafeed traders and fish farmers, and all of them are doing their business profitably. Feed is a crucial input in fish farming which accounts for about 65 – 75 percent of the operational cost of fish production, which means that a substantial part of fish farmers’ income is transferred to feed manufacturers. Good quality feed is a prerequisite for increasing aquaculture productivity in Kyrgyz Republic where particularly fish farmers are using very little volume of commercial feed as supplementary feed. With potential of aquaculture intensification and lack of quality feed, establishment of a commercial feed mill in the country for both carps and trout may have a strong justification. The primary competitors of a new feed mill would be the existing locally manufactured feeds and the commercial feed that are being imported. Imported feeds are mainly for trout and often expensive and not available in the local market throughout the country. Public-private partnership operated feed mill in Kyrgyz Republic with the capacity of 500 kg/hour is expected to be profitable, with an anticipated profit of USD13 617 in year one, rising to USD 97 980 in year five. The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of such a mill is estimated to be 19.1 percent, which is expected to be reasonably good. Therefore, the study recommends establishing a public-private partnership aquafeed mill in Kyrgyz Republic that would be feasible, viable and profitable. The major factors impacting on the performance of the value-chain relate to the feed ingredients, feed production, fish farmers, marketing and other service providers (e.g., financial, academic and research institutions, extension services). Aquafeed value chain shows reasonable promise although there are constrains and a lack of institutional, regulatory and policy environment to oversee this sectoral development. Aquafeed subsector can play an important role in aquaculture sector development as it has strong backward and forward linkages with aquaculture sector, which can eventually play an important role in the overall development of Kyrgyz economy. The study recommends various measures to develop the sub-sector including the establishment of additional feed mills and use of locally available raw feed materials, developing and strengthening quality control and inspection facilities, providing training and better organizational management of fish farms and improving the institutional, legal and policy environment.

    Feeding and feed management of Indian major carps in Andhra Pradesh, India 2013

    This study reviews the aquaculture of Indian major carps, rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla) and mrigal (Cirrhinus cirrhosus) with special reference to current feeding and feed management practices in Andhra Pradesh, India. The study is based on a survey of 106 farmers from four regions in Andhra Pradesh (Kolleru, Krishna, West Godavari, and Nellore). The study was undertaken between December 2009 to July 2010. Kolleru and the surrounding districts of Krishna and West Godavari ar e the primary culture areas. In Nellore district, Indian major carp culture is practiced at a lower intensity to that practiced in Kolleru. In East Godavari district, Indian major carps are primarily cultured in polyculture systems with either tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) or freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). While the study primarily focused on the feed management practices associated with Indian major carp production, management practices that are used under polycultur e conditions with other species groups were also assessed. The study revealed that mash feed was the most popular and widely used feed type. De-oiled rice bran was used as the principal feed ingredient followed by groundnut cake and cotton seed cake. All the farmers reported using de-oiled rice bran, followed by groundnut cake (56 percent farmers), cotton seed cake (40 percent), raw rice bran (30 percent) and other mash feed ingredients. The poor quality of the mash feed ingredients, especially the de-oiled rice bran, groundnut cake, and cotton seed cake was an important issue of concern to the farmers. Commercially manufactured pellet feeds were used by 33 percent of the farmers to compliment their mash feeds, with the majority electing to use sinking pellets. Since 2007, there has been a marked increase in the use of commercially manufactured aquafeeds, most notably for the large scale production of the striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. Grow-out f armers feeding mash feeds used variants of a bag feeding method known as rope and pole feeding. In Nellore district some farmers practiced hapa feeding, while in East Godavari district, farmers fed fish in both the culture ponds (bag feeding) and hapas. Tiger shrimp or freshwater prawns were fed in these ponds using broadcast feeding methods. In the nursery and rearing ponds, the commonly used feed ingredients included groundnut cake, de-oiled rice bran and raw rice bran. The most co mmon feeding practice was broadcast feeding. Rohu broodstock that were collected during the breeding season were fed in a similar manner to the fish in the grow-out production systems. Catla broodstock was segregated from the other culture species, and fed a diet comprising soybean cake, dried fish, and a mineral mixture. Constraints to Indian major carp production were identified, and research and development needs characterized.

    Report of the Expert Workshop on local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management, Abbassa, Egypt, 3–5 December 2023 2024

    This report summarizes the proceedings and outcomes of the “Expert workshop on local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management” convened in Abbassa, Egypt, from 3 to 5 December 2023. The workshop brought together acknowledged aquafeed experts from African countries, governmental agencies, universities, development organizations, private industry and farmers. The workshop was jointly organized by the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) and WorldFish Egypt and hosted by the WorldFish Centre in Abbassa, Egypt. The workshop objectives were to: i) exchange and share knowledge of the use of local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management; ii) showcase technological advances and innovations in local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management; iii) identify country-specific challenges and issues in local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management; iv) identify national and regional needs for technical assistance and capacity building on local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management; and v) recommend strategies to address identified development priorities, knowledge products on local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management. The workshop was divided into an overview, country presentations, technical and producer sessions. The country presentation session included presentations from Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The farmers’ experiences were presented by small farmers from Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and Sierra Leone and experiences from Egyptian aquafeed industries. Following a general plenary discussion, the participants identified seven primary issues that currently constrain aquafeed production and feeding management in African aquaculture, namely: i) limited access to information on alternative feed ingredients (availability and accessibility); ii) poor feed preparation, processing, handling and storage at the farm level; iii) inadequate monitoring of on-farm feeding and farm performances; iv) inadequate investment and operating capitals for small-scale feed producers and farmers; v) inadequate knowledge and skills of farmers and extension workers in improved farm-made feed production, feeding management and farm performances; vi) poor feed quality and availability; and vii) lack of appropriate legal and policy frameworks required for sustainable aquaculture development including quality aquafeed manufacturing. Recommendations were proposed and classified under four categories: i) governance, ii) research and development, iii) capacity building, and iv) value chain.
