    At the request of the government, an FAO Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM) visited the country from 10 to 28 October 2022 to estimate the 2022 crop production and forecast the country’s import requirements during the 2022/23 marketing year (July/June). The mission’s aim was to provide an accurate picture of the severity and extent of the drought and high agriculture input prices that affected the agriculture sector in 2022 and to identify the support requirements to the sector until the next harvest in 2023 as well as the medium-term needs to strengthen agriculture resilience.

    Cultivation of unknow variety of wheat from the grain market is one of the major reasons of low productivity of wheat in the smallholders’ fields. Usually, the variety grown by the smallholders is a mixture of grains of different varieties. The seed value of such a mixed variety is considered poor as grains had not been produced the requirements of good quality seed. The mixed nature of such a variety becomes obvious when plants matured. . There are a number of wheat varieties developed by this research institute which fits well with the region. These include Shams, Gozgon, Turkistan, Yaksart, Gallakor, and Hishorak. Good quality seed of these varieties are available from the institute.

    International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas for Central Asia and the South Caucasus (ICARDA-CAC), in cooperation with FAO, conducted a Farmer Field School program in a village in Kyzylkum, which opened up access to new farming prospects for local smallholders. The publication shares a successful story of the farmer from Karakul district, Bukhara, Uzbekistan who has benefited from the improved variety of wheat seeds.
