The Joint SDG Fund was leveraged to establish a project that aims to bolster organic pineapple cultivation among Indigenous and rural communities situated within Suriname’s pineapple belt. Its overarching goal is to drive Suriname's shift from a minor pineapple producer, marked by conventional growing methods, minimal value addition and negligible exports, to a recognized producer and exporter of premium organic fresh and processed pineapples. Employing an inclusive and sustainable value chain strategy, the programme will empower various stakeholders within the pineapple value chain, particularly Indigenous producers, to enhance their productivity, competitiveness and market access. The project has implemented climate-resilient agronomic methods aimed at enhancing productivity and quality sustainably. Through practical farmer training sessions and on-site trial plots, effective techniques such as soil enrichment, efficient input utilization, and bed-based pineapple planting have been showcased. These efforts contribute to progress towards responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). Moreover, the ASTA Suriname initiative has provided training on good agricultural practices and organic farming, empowering 120 marginalized Indigenous women and youth to actively engage in and reap the benefits of the developing pineapple value chain. This example demonstrates de-risking investments with a food systems perspective. This shift towards sustainable practices not only reduces risks but also enhances the resilience of smallholder farmers and communities in the face of environmental challenges.
