Editor's notes and acknowledgements

Workshop proceedings are primarily the product of the efforts of all the participants, the authors and the contributors to the workshop. The editor would therefore like to thank the very many people who contributed to this volume, as well as the host institute and various supporting organizations who made the workshop possible. Particular thanks for enabling the workshop to take place go to: Institut Sénégalais de Recherches Agricoles (ISRA), GTZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), German Appropriate Technology Exchange (GATE), International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA) and Environment and Development in the Third World (ENDA).

The editing of these proceedings was made possible by the International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA), and their great assistance is gratefully acknowledged. Particular thanks go to Dr. Michael Goe, formerly of ILCA, who was involved in much of the early planning, to Ralph von Kaufmann, Coordinator of ILCA's Animal Traction Thrust, and to Dr. Michael Smalley, Director of Training and Information. Some papers prepared for the workshop were submitted in quite "raw" form, and Damiri Renard, a freelance editor, worked hard on the initial text editing and abstracting. Help in bringing the work up to standard came from the French and English Copy Units of ILCA and particular thanks are due to John Stares and Daouda Niang and their teams. However the ILCA copy units must not be held responsible for the errors that remain. Further assistance with the editing was provided by Malcolm Starkey (formatting many of the tables) and Freda Miller of the Centre for Agricultural Strategy, of the University of Reading (final proofreading). The printing of the proceedings was undertaken by the Information Department of ILCA, with work being supervised by the Production Manager, W/o Manyahlishal Kebebe and the Head of the Pre-Print Unit, Tekleab H. Michael.

The final stage of the publication of this volume was made possible by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) which very kindly assisted the West Africa Animal Traction Network by accepting responsibility for distributing the book.

The photographs used to illustrate the volume were provided by the editor, the workshop photographer, AFRC-Engineering, Joachim Betker, CEEMAT, Enoch Gwani, Samuel Onyango and Heribert Schmitz. Specific acknowledgements are provided in the relevant captions. The workshop reports contained in Part 1 were first written in English and then translated into French by GTZ. The assistance of GTZ in providing this translation and in circulating the initial workshop report is gratefully acknowledged.

Thanks are also due to the Chief Rapporteur of the Workshop, Dr. Abdou Fall and to all the rapporteurs of the different Workshop sessions and groups who included: Mr. Usman Hassan Ahmed, Dr. Kossivi V. Apétofia, Mr. John Ashburner, Mr. Sidi Bah, Dr. Sani Bako, M. Abu Bakar Bangura, M. Dominique Barreaud, M. Sy Bocar, M. Dominique Bordet, Mr. Papa Cham, Mr. Henk Dibbits, M. Alioune Fall, M. Michel Havard, M. Badre Elhimdy, Ms. Elisabeth Huybens, Mr. Andrew Jones, Mr. Bai Henry Kanu, Dr. M. C. Klaij, M. Senou Jean Kokoyé, M. Latévi Teyi Lawson, Dr. Philippe Lhoste, Dr. Lawrence Loewen-Rudgers, Mr. Wilson Mckinlay, Mr. Roelof Meijer, M. Ruben Mungroop, Dr. Anthony Panin, Dr. Dayo O. A. Phillip, M Iyatan Sabi, M. Moulaye 1. Sangaré, Mr. Dawda M. Sarr, M. Cheickne Sidibé, Mr. Mantel Sindazi, Dr. Anthony J. Smith, Dr. Terry Thomas, M. Adama Traoré, Mr. Peter Watson, Mr. Njei Mbah Wilfred and M. Mamane Yabilan.

Appreciation also goes to the support staff who were responsible for typing and/or photocopying the reports of individual workshop sessions including: M. Thieirno Ndiaye, Mr. Malcolm Starkey and M. C. Ouma Amadou Tall.

The editing of these proceedings can be considered the joint responsibility of the West Africa Animal Traction Network Technical Adviser and the Chairman of the Steering Committee in the sense that much of the content is based on joint observations and discussions before, during and after the workshop. However responsibility for writing the workshop report and editing the papers was delegated to Paul Starkey, who must be held responsible for any errors and omissions. For these, and for any other shortcomings, the editor apologizes.

Article 3 of the Statutes of the West Africa Animal Traction Network notes that French and English are the official languages of the Network and that whenever practicable both languages will be used in Network meetings and publications. In line with this, all main reports relating to the workshop are presented in both English and French versions. Furthermore all papers, whether prepared in French or English, have abstracts in both official languages. However, for simplicity one language (English) has been used for editorial notes and to link the various sections.

The 58 papers included in the second part of this volume, were written by 76 authors involved in animal traction research, development and extension. These people come from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds, and together they represent a formidable body of experience. Some have written in the style of scientific papers, while others have given more general reports of their work. The amount by which individual papers were edited varied considerably. It was editorial policy that all contributions submitted had value, and that their publication (in edited form) would contribute to the flow of information on animal traction for agricultural development in West Africa. It is also hoped that publication of workshop papers, in Part 2 of the proceedings, will stimulate others to put their own experiences on paper, so furthering the aims of the Network. It is also hoped that Part 1 of these proceedings (summary report of the workshop, evaluation, networking announcements and addresses) will assist in the planning of future Network activities and cooperation.

The West Africa Animal Traction Network continues to be active, and as these proceedings go to press, the next workshop is already being planned. The editor hopes that the circulation of these proceedings will further stimulate exchanges of information within the region, and so further strengthen the West Africa Animal Traction Network.
