Synopsis (short abstract) Traditional craft operating from open beaches account for the bulk of fish landings on the east coast of India. The difficulties of operating from surf-beaten beaches, the technical limitations of the existing craft and the constraints they put upon the expansion of the fishery and upon the scope for improvement in the wellbeing of the fishermen have been described many times. The requirements for a craftof better performance and economicpotential are, briefly, that the new craft should have a s urf-crossing performance comparable to that of the traditional kattumaram, with a minimum tendency to broach and capsize; it should be strong enough to withstand heavy landings on surf-beaten beaches, but at the same time be capable of easy and quick handling up and down the beach; and it should provide more protection for crew and catch than existing craft. Most important, it should possess greatercarrying capacity and be able to operate at greater distances from the coast in order to increase the catching potential, and these various requirements must be met without incurring added costs of construction and operation that would absorb all of any increase in earnings thus achieved. The Bay of Bengal Programme designed and built a number of prototype beachcraft intended to meet these requirements and tested their surf-crossing and beachianding performance, as described in BOBP/WP/7: Technical Trials of Beachcraft Prototypes in India. The best of the orthodox boat designs, IN D—13, wasselected for evaluation in commercial fishing conditions. This working paper describes the trials, and presents the results.

    Technical Trials of Beachcraft Prototypes in India - BOBP/WP/7 1980

    This is the first report of technical trials conducted in India of four beachcraft prototypes designed for India’s east coastfisheries. The trials were held in May-June 1980 in Ennore, 20 kilometres north of Madras, under the auspices of the Bay of Bengal Programme, in cooperation with the Governments of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The report briefly discusses the limitations of traditional craft operating on India’s surf-beaten east coast and the desirability of developing new types of craft with greater carrying capacity and productivity. It discusses the additional considerations — as regards such matters as the shape of the boat, the construction material, the systems of surf-crossing and beachianding —that must weigh in the design of surfboats. It describes in words and pictures the four prototypes tested in Ennore, the conduct of the trials and the findings they yielded. The trials covered only surf-crossing and beachlanding. Of the four prototypes, two — considered the most promising — were selected for intensive fishing trials. The report sets down the relative merits of the four prototypes. The report may serve to keep governments, development agencies and boatbuilders informed about the progress of development of beachcraft. It may also be of interest to small-scale fisheries planners in general. The prototypes were built at Aquamarine (P) Limited, Madras; Indian Seacraft, Madras, and the Andhra Pradesh Fisheries Corporation Boatyard at Kakina da. Diesel engines were supplied by Greaves Lombardini Limited, Madras.

    Fishing Trials With High-Opening Bottom Trawls From Chandipur, Orissa, India - BOBP/WP/48 1986

    This paper reports on the findings of fishing trials with one-boat bottom trawls conducted from Chandipur, in Balasore district, Orissa, in 1984/85. Detailed specifications and designs of some of the trawls are given. Trials during 65 fishing days clearly demonstrated the superiority of the high opening bottom trawls over the conventional bottom shrimp trawl. The trials were conducted along commercial lines employing private trawlers. The cooperating agency in Orissa was the Directorate of Fisheries. The Orissa fishing trials were part of a wider project organized jointly by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) and the Government of India for developing and introducing high-opening bottom trawling for food fish and shrimp. Two earlier working papers (BOB P/WP/10 and BOBP/WP/20) document trials conducted in Tamil Nadu, while one other paper (BOBP/WP/21) suggests improvements to the deck machinery and layout of small coastal trawlers.

    This paper summaries a study on the availability and prices of materials used to construct the hulls of fishing craft for the important small-scale fisheries of the East Coast of India. The paper should be of interest to development planners, legislators and administrators. Builders of fishing craft, suppliers of materials, and owners and prospective owners of fishing craft may also find useful the information on trends in prices and availability of boatbuilding materials and the possibilities o f alternative materials. The study covered the following boatbuilding materials: timber for kattumarams and boats; fibre-reinforced plastics; ferrocement; steel; and aluminium, which is used forsheathing wooden hulls and is also a construction material in its own right. The study was carried out by Matsyasagar Consultancy Services Private Limited under contract to the Programme for the Development of Small-Scale Fisheries in the Bay of Bengal, GCP/RAS/040/SWE (usually abbreviated to th e Bay of Bengal Programme). The Programme is executed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA). The main aims of the Bay of Bengal Programme are to develop and demonstrate technologies by which the conditions of small-scale fishermen and the supply of fish from the small-scale sector may be improved, in five of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal — Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka an d Thailand.
