Synopsis (short abstract) Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is the most contagious transboundary animal disease (TAD) affecting cloven hoofed animals. Significant economic losses are produced by its high morbidity and the export trade restrictions imposed on affected countries. There are seven recognised serotypes of FMD (O, A, C, Asia 1, SAT 1, SAT 2 and SAT 3), which differ in distribution across the world. Serotypes A and O have the widest distribution, occurring in Africa, Asia and South America. Types SAT 1, 2 and 3 are currently restricted to Africa only and Asia 1 to Asia; the capacity to invade free areas is common to all types and periodically SATs are introduced into the Near East, and Asia-1 into western and eastern parts of Eurasia.     The Third meeting of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Epidemiology and Laboratory Networks for West Eurasia was organized virtually under the umbrella of the GF-TADs, by its FMD Working Group (WG), during 17-18 August 2021. The meeting bring together members of the West Eurasia Epidemiology and Laboratory networks with the objectives to share information on the current FMD situation in the region and identify challenges; strengthen the engagement of the regional networks in capacity building programmes needed to support the implementation of the FMD control strategies in the region; update membership of the epidemiology and laboratory network leaders and regional leading laboratories; develop biennial regional epidemiology and laboratory networks workplans for 2021-2023; set the methodology for linking the laboratory and epidemiology networks for continuous support to the national and regional objectives for FMD control; and introduce the PCP-FMD self-assessment tool (SAT) for monitoring progress and assessing national capacity on implementation of the FMD control strategy.

    Developing an emergency vaccination plan for foot-and-mouth disease in free countries 2022

    This guide is intended to be used by veterinary contingency planners in foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) free countries. The concepts presented can also be adapted to other animal health threats. The guide provides recommendations for the structure and content of an emergency vaccination plan, once the decision to vaccinate has been made, and the vaccination strategy has been decided.It does not include any consideration of the decision-making process on if, when and how to proceed with vaccination. The plan should be adapted to the context and requirements of the country. The guide has been drafted based on the outcome of two European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD) workshops on “Putting vaccination into Practice” held in Grange, Ireland from 13 to 16 March 2017, and in Malaga, Spain from 19 to 22 March 2019. The workshops identified the key elements required for the development of an emergency vaccination implementation plan. Further information has been included to extend the guide to all aspects of an emergency vaccination plan.

    Strengthening control of foot-and-mouth disease in Mozambique - TCP/MOZ/3501 2017

    Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is prevalent in Mozambique and livestock farmers who entirely rely on the well-being and marketability of their animals need to be protected from severe economic losses caused by movement restrictions related to the disease. The project aimed to contribute to the development of capacities to better tackle the progressive control and eradication of FMD and help improve the animal health situation in the country.
