Aquaculture possibilities in some islands of the South Pacific

Synopsis (short abstract) The author’s observations in some South Pacific Islands demonstrate the urgent need of the inhabitants for protein food. The limited land areas of the islands, which are generally volcanic or atoll in origin, with extensive coral reefs, indicate that the greater bulk of protein food needed here must be supplied from the vast surrounding waters of the Pacific. In the inland and coastal waters of these islands, fish farming would be useful, especially for the islanders to participate in actively, even to the extent of producing their own daily requirements for fish protein food. To enable them to accomplish self-help in food production, the Consultant tried to evaluate the problems and simplify as much as possible the approach to probable solutions as presented in this report. Although some observations and data presented herein are incomplete, due to the limited time he could spend in each of the islands involved, efforts were made to gather information from many sources, both governmen t and private sectors.

    Applied research and experimental development requirements for the expansion and intensification of aquaculture in Latin America were identified on the basis of ten-year development plans prepared by the Governments of the region, and taking into account the local needs and desires of people most affected, impact on human nutrition, feasibility of science and technology, least time required for implementation, environmental compatibility, and contributions to social futures. Structured research and experimentation following applied systems approaches were considered essential for the evaluation, transfer, refinement, and adaption of various forms of aquaculture to the region. Multidisciplinary teams have to be organized to undertake simultaneous studies on problems affecting large-scale adoption of the main aquaculture production systems. The Task Force identified some of the major problems for investigations, but recognized that many associated problems may occur in the course of Stud ies and therefore research should be conducted by multidisciplinary teams. Flexibility is needed in programme development at the Regional Centre, but quick impact and commercial-scale culture were foreseen through use of pond culture of tilapia, particularly hybrids. Much interest in the culture of indigenous species was noted, and experimental work on these are recommended. Immediate opportunities for growing tilapia in cages, carp, trout and oysters at the Centre were identified, as were longe r term opportunities for polyculture and for the farming of mussels and shrimps.

    The five training manuals on Simple methods for aquaculture and the Handbook on small-scale freshwater fish farming presented in this CD-ROM have been produced by the Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service of the Fishery Resources Division, FAO Fisheries Department. These manuals are written in simple language and f ocus on the practical aspects of semi-intensive fish culture in fresh waters, from site selection and fish farm construction to the raising, final harvesting and marketi ng of the fish. They are primarily intended for extension workers, technicians and teachers, to help them present the practical aspects of freshwater fish farming to small-scale farmers in developing countries.
