    This Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper presents the findings of a value chain analysis of the aquafeed (aquatic animal feed) sub-sector for the striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) farming in Viet Nam, including a review of aquafeed regulatory framework in the country. The striped catfish (pangasius) production sub-sector is characterized by intensive pond production technology and high-quality production inputs. In 2014, annual production of pangasius was 1 143 797 tonnes. The key actors in the value chain comprise input suppliers, including feed ingredients suppliers, feed manufacturers, and hatchery operators (seed producers), along with fingerling and grow-out farmers, fish processors, exporters, consumers and service providers. In recent years, large-scale vertically integrated enterprises have started to emerge that operate along the entire value chain, and these now dominate many areas of production.

    The “Practical Training Manual on Doing Aquaculture as a Business for Small and Medium-Scale farmers” is composed by two modules: Module 1 “The Technical Dimension of Doing Aquaculture as a Business” and Module 2 “The Economic Dimension of Doing Aquaculture as a Business” The target users of both modules are small and medium-scale fish farmers. The purpose of this module is to enhance small and medium-scale fish farmers’ knowledge and capacities in understanding and applying the basic technical principles and concepts of doing aquaculture as a business in their daily activities. Module 1 introduces the factors affecting primary productivity, carrying capacity, growth rate and yield in water, the general criteria for classifying the aquaculture systems and the main features of pond and cage based fish farming systems. The concepts of seed production, nutrition and feeds and harvest and post-harvest practices are also introduced.

    Aquaculture development. 5. Use of wild fish as feed in aquaculture 2011
    These technical guidelines on the use of wild fish as feed in aquaculture have been developed to support sections of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) addressing responsible fisheries management (Article 7) and aquaculture development (Article 9) and in particular in support of Articles 9.1.3 , 9.1.4 and 9.4.3. The objective of these guidelines is to assist those concerned to ensure both aquaculture growth and equitable and sustained use of available fish stocks. The guide lines cover a number of issues relevant to the use of wild fish in feeds in aquaculture, ranging from ecosystem and environmental impacts, ethical issues and responsible use of fish as feed, aquaculture technology and development, and statistics and information needs for management. However, issues relating fisheries management are not covered here, as these have been considered within separate sets of guidelines related to fisheries management and there exist several sets of technical guideline s on the sustainable management of fisheries and several continuing initiatives to improve sustainable management of fisheries which inter alia would also apply to feed-fish fisheries.
