    The need for adaptation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector and the associated challenges are expected to increase with climate change. This has been stated with a very high degree of confidence by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its Fifth Assessment Report (IPCC AR5). The Report also refers to the complexity of adaptation in the description of nine constraining factors, and laying down ten overlapping approaches for managing the risks of climate change through adaptation. T his document reviews the numerous options for aquaculture described in sector literature; it identifies key research areas that would improve the sector’s capacity to adapt to climate change impacts and inform policy on adaptation. The document ends with a set of suggestions for assessing potential adaptation measures and implementing them. These are built around two pillars: a sustainable livelihood framework, and an ecosystems approach to aquaculture management, supported by risk assessment an d management along the value chain and a feasibility assessment.     The international symposium on “Inland Fisheries and aquaculture: advances in technology, stock assessment and citizen science in an era of climate change” was organized in conjunction with the thirty-first session of the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission in Killarney, Ireland on 20–21 June 2022. The symposium was organized by Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications. The symposium was attended by 105 participants from 14 countries. The main documentation comprised six invited papers and 35 experience papers and 15 posters. The symposium had five major themes, which were: (i) Inland fish stock assessment, (ii) Developments in freshwater fish monitoring technologies with an emphasis on non-destructive methods, (iii) The problems and challenges of climate change and its impacts on inland aquatic resources and fisheries, (iv) Citizen science, and (v) Aquaculture - traditional freshwater systems vs recirculation systems. The symposium provided valuable networking opportunities for the participating scientists, especially young scientists could share their research findings. Many promising studies and innovative technologies and methodologies were presented. This Occasional Paper in conjunction with a special issue of Fisheries Management and Ecology represents the proceedings of the symposium. The thirty-first session of EIFAAC, held in Killarney from 22 to 24 June 2022, discussed and endorsed the conclusions and recommendations from the symposium.

    Fisheries and aquaculture is a sector of special importance to food security, nutrition and livelihood in the Asia-Pacific Region, which can be significantly impacted by climate changes and related disaster risks. Effectively addressing climate change impacts and managing disaster risks in fisheries and aquaculture sector are vitally important to building resilience of the sector for sustained and greater contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to ending hunger, poverty eradication and sustainable use of natural resources. FAO member countries in the region have been making good effort and significant progress in addressing climate change impacts and related disaster risks with support of international communities. A FAO regional consultative workshop was convened to bring together a wide range of players including country governments, regional organizations and other partners to share their knowledge and good practices in addressing climate change implications for fisheries and aquaculture in the region, to assess the progress made in addressing issues with marine capture fisheries, inland capture fisheries, coastal aquaculture and inland aquaculture in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation in implementing the national plan of actions for addressing climate change in fisheries and aquaculture, and to recommend strategies for addressing institutional and capacity gaps in building climate-resilience fisheries and aquaculture industry in the region. The publication is the compilation of the workshop executive report, background technical papers, extended summary of presentations by representatives from participating government and FAO partners, and the workshop conclusions and recommendations.
