Synopsis (short abstract) The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for multi-stakeholder partnerships to enable collective and coherent actions that provide the necessary financial, knowledge and institutional support for achieving progress across different sectors. In order to accomplish its mandate, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) works strategically with a range of partners, including academic and research institutions, civil society organizations, cooperatives, parliamentarians and the private sector.

    The zero-deforestation movement has gained considerable momentum as governments and companies enter into commitments to curb deforestation. The most innovative are multi-stakeholder initiatives, where governments and international organi- zations have joined with the private sector and civil society organizations in making commit- ments to reduce deforestation. These pledges have created opportunities for improved forest governance by envisaging the private sector at the centre of the movement. They have also encouraged a broader understanding of the drivers and and consequences of deforestation, and how these can be more realistically addressed.

    The DSL-IP is led by FAO, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and in partnership with the World Bank, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT), and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The USD 104 million funding under the GEF-7 funding cycle, along with over USD 800 million in co-financing, will assist 11 countries located across Africa and Asia in fostering resilience of production systems in drylands, promoting restoration and rehabilitation, and improving livelihoods through a comprehensive landscape approach. The program will crowd-in new collaborations with the private sector across multiple scales and civil society, especially organizations for rural indigenous youth and women, for enduring results and coherent action through whole-of society engagement.
