Synopsis (short abstract) The policy brief is a reflection upon key take home messages from the constellation of thinking and events in 2021 through a lens of science, practice, and policy with concrete examples from countries participating the Resilient Food Systems Programme. These include; the UN Food Systems Summit; updated evidence and deeper commitments to addressing climate change through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC Climate Change 2021) and the 26th Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change; and opportunities to intensify efforts on biodiversity and restoring land health included in the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UN CBD).

    Learn more about the Large-scale forest landscape restoration in Africa project: tree-rich landscapes to foster biodiversity, climate change resilience, and better livelihoods, which is being implemented in Malawi from 2021 to 2024 with support from the Government of Germany through GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH). This initiative is part of a larger programme also funded in Cameroon, Kenya, and Rwanda simultaneously. It was designed in support of the Government of the Republic of Malawi’s ambitious target of 4.5 million hectares for restoration under the Bonn Challenge and the AFR100 initiative, and in support of Malawi’s National Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy and National Charcoal Strategy (2017).

    This project supports the Government of the Philippines in efforts to conserve the country’s globally important agrobiodiversity and traditional agroecosystems. The project comprised three interlinked components: mainstreaming agrobiodiversity into policy and legal frameworks; piloting activities to expand dynamic conservation practices in three pilot communities; and disseminating learning and preparing for scaling up. The project aligned strongly with Philippines Government, FAO and GEF priorities, and impressive progress was made on policy objectives. There was less progress in enhancing dynamic conservation practices for agrobiodiversity in the pilot communities. Recommendations focused on developing a successful exit strategy, capturing experience effectively, and carrying out a systems review for future FAO-supported agrobiodiversity projects.
