Synopsis (short abstract) In an effort to assist the Iraqi Government in addressing the challenges currently faced by the displaced farming population in their return to farming, the International Organization on Migration (IOM) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have agreed to collaborate on a joint study to identify the needs of the displaced population and strategies for restarting agricultural production in conflict-affected rural areas. The study aims to 1) identify the role that agriculture plays as a source of livelihood for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees; 2) understand the drivers, constraints and challenges confronted by displaced and returnee households regarding return to areas of origin and resumption of farming; and 3) investigate how best to rehabilitate the agricultural sector to create opportunities for resilient and robust agricultural livelihoods for returnees and prospective returnees.

    The scale and protracted nature of displacement today highlights more than ever the need to integrate environmental preparedness and response in humanitarian interventions. Addressing the environmental impacts of forced displacement and related risks is essential with environmental protection being a necessary pre-condition of human protection. Over past years, FAO has worked with partners to alleviate environmental pressures and facilitate energy access for both host and displaced communities. Funded by DG ECHO, this initiative adopts a multidisciplinary approach that combines emergency assistance with longterm resilience and development efforts towards the sustainable management of forests and ecosystem restoration, enhancing livelihood resilience, energy access, nutrition and food security in displacement settings. Conceived as a pilot with global level action and country activities in Djibouti, Somalia, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania, greening the humanitarian response in displacement settings represents a further opportunity for bridging and maximizing positive effects along the humanitarian–development–peace nexus.

    Marked by more than forty years of conflict, the province of Ituri, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has experienced massive population displacement and recurrent violence. The basic needs of the population, notably access to food and agriculture, have been seriously impacted, harming the quality of life and worsening food insecurity. The goal of the Data in Emergencies team at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was to assess the impact of decades of violence on agriculture, food security and livelihoods in Ituri, and to propose recommendations for programming.

    The insurgency in northeastern Nigeria remains a significant driver of the humanitarian crisis. Severe flooding across the country in 2022 devastated crops and livestock. Price spikes are further hindering vulnerable households’ access to food. By mid-year, 4.35 million people are projected to be acutely food insecure during the lean season in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. Around 80 percent of northeastern Nigerians live in rural areas and depend on agriculture to provide for their families. Restoring their livelihoods is crucial to the humanitarian response.
