The condition of the water, including its chemical, physical and biological characteristics, defines water quality, which could be affected by excess inputs of chemicals or microorganisms such as nutrients, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, microplastics and pathogens. Deteriorating water quality is a global challenge. Pollution of water bodies is not only a serious risk to ecosystem health and biodiversity, but also to human health and economic development, such as food, aquaculture and energy production.

A global analysis of the pre-implementation phase of co-management systems: an academic and policy literature review 2024

Fisheries co-management has emerged as a pivotal strategy for sustainable resource management worldwide. It fosters collaboration among local resource users, governments, NGOs, and academics. The global landscape of fisheries co-management is characterized by its diversity. The implementation of fisheries co-management typically unfolds in three distinct phases: pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation. The pre-implementation phase is crucial, involving stakeholder identification and engagement, objective setting, and the development of legal and social frameworks. This study analysed the complexities of the pre-implementation phase, based on a set of indicators about the context, attributes, pre-existing conditions, drivers, governance approaches, participatory processes, and enabling conditions associated with co-management systems. This analytical framework is based on an extensive literature review, encompassing both academic and policy documents. This dual approach of academic and policy review allowed for a holistic understanding of co-management systems, considering both theoretical insights and practical implementations. The results provide a comprehensive overview of the essential foundational elements that are crucial in fostering co-management systems, some of them capable of addressing the complex challenges faced by fisheries in the contemporary world. This knowledge can be utilized by government and non-government organizations planning to support or engage in the development of co-management systems across various ecological, social, and governance contexts.

A One Health Priority Research Agenda for Antimicrobial Resistance 2023
    Also available in:

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been recognized as one of the greatest global threats to humans, animals, plants and ecosystems health threatening the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. In our globally connected world, resistance to antimicrobials may spread and circulate among humans, animals, plants and the environment, necessitating a “One Health” approach. While the One Health approach is relevant to all efforts to prevent and control AMR, this priority research agenda focuses on research areas at the interface between sectors. This research agenda is a joint product of the Quadripartite organizations –FAO, UNEP, WHO and WOAH - and a result of extensive stakeholder and expert engagement. A structured mixed-methods approach was used including reviews of academic and grey literature, online open global survey, and consensus exercise by modified Delphi method in which global experts prioritized research areas for the five pillars: transmission, integrated surveillance, interventions, behavioral insights and change, and economics and policy. We hope this research agenda will serve as a guiding tool for countries, research institutes and funding bodies to support for One Health AMR research, helping policymakers, researchers and the multidisciplinary scientific community to work together across sectors on solutions that will prevent and mitigate AMR on a national, regional and global scale as further evidence on research strategies, interventions and policies is required to understand what works, in which contexts and for whom.
