Development of large size carp fingerling production technology

To meet the present demand of large size (about 10 cm) carp fingerling for massive open water stocking in Bangladesh, a modified technology of large size carp fingerling production was demonstrated at four government farms, utilizing locally available facilities and feed ingredients. In the modified system production was 10602292 kg/ha in 3050 days. This rate of production in one cycle is about 4 times higher than the production under the traditional system of large size fingerling rearing. With increased management skills, raising of 45 crops of large size fingerling was found technically feasible. This means that the improved system has the potential for producing 53005500 kg of large fingerling/ha/season. By further improvement of feeding system production can be increased up to 900010500 kg/ha/season by year round multicycle multispecies culture. Against the traditional stocking rates of 40140 prenursed fry/m2, the modified system used only 819 fry/m2, but produced a much hig her biomass of larger fingerling of substantially higher sale value. Production cost of 1 kg fingerling was Tk. 42. Profit over investment was Tk. 25 (60%) in modified system, which is significantly higher than the traditional (Tk. 19/kg i.e. 18%) technology. But the production cost of fingerlings in modified system will be Tk.27/kg when the farmers will use their own stocking material instead of buying. In that case the profit will be 148%.

Effects of green manure on fish production in polyculture ponds with silver carp and bighead carp as main species

Four types of green manure were used in the polyculture ponds with silver carp and bighead carp as the main species. Direct application of green manure resulted in a higher fish production ranging from 19.59 to 25.33 kg/ha/day. Sudan grass was best among four types of green manure.

FAO has always played a leading role in the publication of practice-oriented technical papers and training materials on fisheries and fish culture. One of the objectives of producing this huge wealth of ready-to-use technical information is to support the sustainable development of fish culture all over the world. Following these principles, two very successful, richly illustrated practical technical guides were produced in the mid-1980s on the mass production of eggs, early fry,1 advanced fry a nd fingerlings of common carp. Owing to profound political, social and economic changes, the production of fish ponds and small water reservoirs in many countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and in the Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) has declined considerably in recent decades. In order to restart and increase carp production in these regions, hands-on training courses supported with handouts has proved useful in the practical training and self-education of concerned and interested fish farmers. The present handout builds on an earlier FAO publication.2 The original watercolour illustrations used in this publication are the work of László Horváth, father of the senior author. Although the set of these pictures is practically complete, in order to prepare an even more understandable technical reference, additional black and white illustrations from other publications, as well as tables and text, have been inserted where sources were correctly indexed and listed under References.
