Synopsis (short abstract) This book compiles a set of 26 papers that present the direct, practical experiences and results of a large number of local practitioners and experts that supported the Transboundary agro-ecosystem management project of the Kagera river basin (Kagera TAMP) during the period 2010-2015. The book has been compiled by the Land and Water Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to reflect the wide range of experiences, approaches and tools that were used for promo ting participatory diagnostics, adaptive management and adoption of sustainable land and agro-ecosystem management (SLaM) practices from farm to watershed / landscape scale. The project was supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Governments of the four countries that share the transboundary basin - Burundi, Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda and project partners. It is hoped that the lessons learned are considered and taken up by the Governments and the TerrAfric a partnership for scaling up and mainstreaming SLaM as part of the wider set of lessons learned from the 36 projects in 26 countries under the Terrafrica Strategic Investment programme, including Kagera TAMP.

    Sustainable land management (SLM) practices are increasingly well known, yet barriers to implementation limit their contribution to addressing land degradation challenges. Weak governance and institutions are commonly recognised as hindrances to the adoption of SLM practices. This report presents country cases from the Resilient Food Systems programme which highlight some of the successful SLM project activities undertaken, the policy and institutional strengthening methods key to enabling them and valuable lessons learned. The innovative approaches to improving weak governance have demonstrated positive impacts for both the environment and livelihoods of rural communities.

    Water accounting in the Nile River Basin

    This report describes the water accounting study for the Nile River Basin carried out by IHE-Delft using the Water Productivity (WaPOR) data portal of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The Nile River Basin faces a huge challenge in terms of water security. With an expected doubling of the population in the basin in the next twenty-five years, water supply in the basin will be further depleted as demands for agriculture, domestic and industry continues to grow. Water availability in the basin will also be threatened by climate change and variability and pollution from increased agricultural and industrial activities and from urban areas. However with limited up-to-date ground observations, in terms of duration, completeness, and quality of the hydro-meteorological records it is difficult to draw an appropriate picture of the water resources conditions. The Water Accounting Plus (WA+) system designed by IHE Delft with its partners FAO and IWMI has been applied to gain full insights into the state of the water resources in the basin.

    Since 2001, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has worked with more than 180 000 farmers in West Africa to build more productive and resilient agricultural systems through the Integrated Production and Pest Management Programme (IPPM). Based on a well-tested farmer field school (FFS) approach, this participatory, community-based educational method combines principles and practices from community development, non-formal education, agroecology and adaptive ecosystem management.
