No results found. An ever-increasing human population drives an increasing demand for many different wood products, which can effectively be met through plantations. Although this has been recognized for over a century, progress in getting large areas into production has been far slower than projected. There are many reasons for the shortfall in plantation production, including a general lack of effort in actively engaging communities in plantations in a way that benefits small-scale producers, the wood products industry and ultimately the consumers of wood products. An important means of expanding plantation production and benefiting small-scale producers is through corporate smallholder partnerships that establish agreements for industries to purchase wood produced by other parties, including but not limited to smallholders. While there are examples of successful corporate smallholder partnerships in the tropics, many attempts have been only partially successful or have failed entirely in produci ng significant quantities of wood in ways that benefit both producer and processor. -

It details the Secretariat's capacity development initiatives aimed at enhancing expertise in sustainable mountain development and addressing the limited availability of specialized courses on mountain themes. Each year, the Secretariat collaborates with partners to establish university courses and organize summer courses, workshops and training sessions. These initiatives aim to bolster members' understanding and skills in sustainable mountain development. The IPROMO training programme, organized annually with the University of Turin and the University of Tuscia, offers a two-week summer course on sustainable mountain management in Northern Italy. Since its inception in 2008, IPROMO has trained over 600 professionals from 93 countries. The GROW – Agrobiodiversity in a Changing Climate course, organized with La Sapienza University of Rome and other partners, focuses on the significance of biodiversity in agriculture. It equips participants with knowledge and tools to improve the resilience and productivity of farming systems amid climate change. Over 130 students from 55 countries have participated since 2018. Launched in 2023, the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in Mountain Areas initiative, in collaboration with La Sapienza University of Rome, aims to strengthen national governments' capacities. National trainings focus on analysing environmental and socioeconomic conditions to develop effective solutions for sustainable resource management in mountain regions. The Mountain Partnership website also hosts a comprehensive database of learning opportunities, ranging from free online courses to advanced degrees in sustainable mountain development, providing valuable resources for expanding knowledge and expertise in this crucial area.
