Synopsis (short abstract) This review documents the available literature on pinniped/fisheries operational interactions, including as much infoiiiiation as possible from both scientific papers and local reports. Seven areas are examined worldwide and the status of the species found throughout these areas is reviewed. The interactions detrimental to fisheries are described in terms of the extent of depredation, gear damage and disturbances during passive and active net, trap and line fishing and fish farming. The mortality of pinniped species is detailed in terms of numbers dying during each of the different types of fishing operation. Mitigation measures that have been tried in different areas are discussed. Interactions occur throughout the world and vary greatly in extent and in their impact on either a fishery or pinniped population, ranging from an infrequent interaction in a specific area to large-scale problems causing population declines or substantial economic losses. Thirty six of the total of forty-five pinnipeds have been recorded as being involved in some form of interaction with fishing operations or fish fauns. Fourteen interactions involve pinnipeds only and have no effect on fisheries. No interactions are recorded as being only detrimental to the fisheries and not to the pinnipeds involved. Nine pinnipeds have no recorded interactions with fishing operations.

    Recent information on marine mammal - fishery interactions is reviewed. A species by species approach is taken for each of the major marine fishing areas of the world. Most recent studies have been devoted to the accidental entanglement or mortality of marine mammals in fishing operations. Several species or populations of marine mammal may be threatened with extinction or severe depletion from such interactions. Most of the fisheries involved are gillnet fisheries. Relatively few recent studies have addressed the possible competitive interactions between marine mammals and fisheries for food and fishery resources.

    This document is a report of the proceedings and compilation of the papers presented at the regional consultation on interactive mechanisms for small-scale fisheries management, which was held in Bangkok, Thailand in November 2001. The meeting identifies constraints and responsibilities in decentralized small-scale fisheries management and offers practical solutions to the social, economic, environmental and legal constraints to local fisheries management. The fisheries sector has grown dramatic ally in Asia over the past three decades and the region is now a main supplier to the global fish market. However, the impressive growth has been accompanied by serious challenges in the form of over-exploitation of coastal resources. Country papers included in the publication examine national experiences in small-scale fisheries management in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. Separate papers provide regional perspectives on the issue while ex perience papers report on the working of small-scale fisheries management projects in the region.

    An Expert Consultation on Interactions between Sea Turtles and Fisheries within an Ecosystem Context was convened by FAO and held in Rome, Italy, from 9 to 12 March 2004. The meeting was attended by 11 experts from seven countries, covering expertise related to sea turtle biology and conservation, fishing gear technology, fisheries management and socio-economics. The Expert Consultation was organized to provide technical input to the Technical Consultation to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, lat er in 2004, as agreed at the Twenty-fifth Session of the Committee on Fisheries, held in Rome, Italy, from 24 to 28 February 2003. This information paper provides a summary of the Consultation’s outcomes and outputs, including overviews of sea turtle status, fisheries impacts, possible managerial solutions, socio-economic aspects and recommendations for future work and actions.
