Synopsis (short abstract) This Compendium presents the findings of a series of regional studies, consultations and workshops organized by FAO in preparation for the World Congress on Communication for Development (Rome, October 2007). The compendium serves as a reference document and compares present trends, experiences and challenges in Communication for Development across regions, and projects. It focuses on the applications of communication methods and media, particularly in the field of food security, natural resourc es management and rural development, with a view for offering new directions for mainstreaming Communication for Develpement in different regions and for fostering new partnerships.

Development strategy during the 196O and 1970s was based on the philosophy that Developing countries lacked improved technology and capital for speeding up their development industrialization was promoted in order to capitalize on the abundant fish resources. However. the anticipated expansion of the economy did not happen and the development approach shifted towards an integrated rural strategy where emphasis is put on the community as a whole to upgrade incomes and the quality of lif e through technical assistance and the active participation of fisherfolk and the community.

In a first section, the status and potential for development of coastal aquaculture in selected African countries are presented. A general review of this development in the continent as a whole introduces individual country studies (Egypt, Ghana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Nigeria and Tunisia). A second section presents selected aspects of coastal aquaculture development: socio-economic aspects related to its planning and implementation; some of the particular problems encountered with the deve lopment of penaeid shrimp culture; review of the experience gained in the Mediterranean countries; brackishwater pond culture and fish-pen aquaculture in Far Eastern Asia; and coastal marine cage culture of fish based on the recent technology developed in Malaysia.
