Synopsis (short abstract) This Regional Study and Workshop on the Environmental Assessment and Management of Aquaculture Development (TCP/RAS/2253) was requested by governments of the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) and funded through the Tenchnical Co-operation Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The project was launched in September 1992, with a planning meeting in Bangkok attended by National Environment Co-ordinators (NECs) nominated by participating g overnments. Following this planning meeting, the NECs undertook detailed country studies in preparation for the final workshop, held on 21–26 February 1994, at the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAPA) of FAO. The final workshop was attended by 30 government officers from 16 countries in the region, as well as 40 other participants that included representatives of various international organisations, international and regional resource speakers, members of the TCP project team (an ec onomist, environmental management specialist and legal expert) and observers from government agencies, non-government organisations and the private sector. The governments represented by their respective NECs and senior government planners included: Bangladesh; Cambodia; China; Hong Kong; India; Indonesia; Iran; Korea (Rep.); Lao PDR; Malaysia; Myanmar; Nepal; the Philippines; Sri Lanka; Thailand; and Vietnam. The NEC of Pakistan prepared a country report which was considered by the workshop. DP R Korea had participated in the planning meeting, but did not attend the final workshop. Participating international organisations included the World Health Organization (WHO), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

    The Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) Regional Technical Workshop on Sustainable Marine Cage Aquaculture Development, held from 25 to 26 January 2009 in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, was organized in view of the growing importance and interest of this aquaculture sub-sector across the region. The workshop focus was on environmental impact assessment and monitoring, and aquaculture licensing for marine aquaculture cage systems and aimed at identifying constraints and shortcomings that requi red to be dealt with to support the development of the cage industry and facilitate investments from the private sector. The document contains a set of suggestions and recommendations with regards to technical and policy requirements needed to support the growth of the aquaculture sector as a whole and more specifically cage fish farming. The report also contains three review documents on marine cage aquaculture in the region, regulation of Norwegian net-cage fish farming, and a review on cage a quaculture licensing procedures prepared as background discussion papers for the workshop. With specific regard to environmental impact assessment (EIA) the discussions held at the workshop clearly indicate that there is a need for the region and individual Commission members to develop an ad hoc EIA format based on the conditions of the local marine environment. A proposed cage aquaculture licence procedure was discussed and proposed at the workshop based on the format developed and adopted by the Sultanate of Oman.

    Regional Workshop on the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coral Reefs 1997

    The Regional Workshop convened by M S Swaminathan Research Foundation in collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Programme of FAO (BOBP) is designed to address these issues and to develop an action plan for saving the remaining coral reefs in the SAARC region. Since its establishment in 1989, M S S R F has given priority attention to the conservation and sustainable use of Coastal Mangrove ecosystems. In many areas, Mangroves, sea grass meadows and coral reefs constitute an integrated ecosystem. Th e Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve represents one such integrated ecosystem. Currently, a detailed action plan is being prepared with assistance from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) for preserving for posterity the biological wealth of the Gulf of Mannar region.

    This document is directed to aquaculture development specialists, coastal resource use planners and government officials involved and interested in the planning and management of coastal aquaculture development within the wider context of resource use in coastal areas. It is intended to serve in the promotion of environmental management of coastal aquaculture. Guidelines are given for improved environmental management of coastal aquaculture based on an overview of selected published experiences and concepts. Potential adverse environmental effects of and on coastal aquaculture practices are addressed with consideration of main socio-economic and bio-physical factors. Methodologies are presented for the assessment and monitoring of environmental hazards and impacts of coastal aquaculture. Selected environmental management options are described for application both at policy-level and farm-level.
