Synopsis (short abstract) 01. The purpose of this study is to bring together in summary form all the pertinent information relating to the fisheries sector of Bangladesh to examine its potentials for and constraints to further development. The present and future potential contribution of the fisheries sector to fish supplies are analysed with a view to determine how such potentials can be economically tapped to benefit the people. 02. Having examined the resource base as well as recognising the urgent need and demand f or fish, constraints to expanded fish production are then critically evaluated. After detailed examination of the development potentials and opportunities, especially in terms of feasibility, a plan and programme of actions and strategy is outlined for government consideration. 03. In sum, this study presents the analysis of the potentials and opportunities for greater fish production in the country's waters, especially inland waters. Growth in capture fish production in Bangladesh has been lo w, even insignificant to keep pace with demand and need for fish. In fact, inland capture fisheries which historically had been supplying about three-fourth of the country's fish landings has steadily declined at about 2 % each year over the last 5 years. 04. Causes or factors responsible for the slow and/or stagnating growth in the country's fish supply by types of fisheries and waters are reviewed. These constraints to higher fish output are clearly identified and alternative measures are re commended in overcoming them.

    This is a weighty report of formidable bulk and understandably so. Rarely has a Workshop in Bangladesh or anywhere else been so comprehensive in mandate or assembled such an array of fisheries expertise. Why was the workshop held? Quite simply, to give effect to Bangladesh's vision of fisheries development and management, set forth in its Perspective Development Plan for 1995-2010. That plan seeks to increase production of fish, manage and conserve fisheries resources for present and futur e generations, encourage private enterprise, increase overall economic growth, and generate employment and incomes, particularly for the rural poor and unemployed youth. These are comprehensive goals, and call for clear guidelines and strategies to address the problems and concerns of fisheries. The National Workshop on Fisheries Resources Development and Management, in Bangladesh, held 29 October-1 November, 1995, in Dhaka, sought to evolve such guidelines and strategies. The Worksh op's recommendations are wide-ranging. They relate to the management of inland fisheries, brackishwater and marine fisheries resources; the management needs of freshwater, marine and brackishwater aquaculture; integrated management of land and water; financing of all these sectors; the legal framework for fishing community development and management; the marketing of fish and fish products. In sum, the Workshop (sponsored jointly by the FAO through BOBP, and the ODA) left nothing uncovered or untouched. The report of this Workshop should therefore be a valuable document - for research and reference, and for the needs of everyone who is concerned with fisheries development and management in Bangladesh.

    Expanding market opportunities for freshwater fish 2024

    This publication is the main outcome of a technical workshop on ‘Market system approach for resilient agri-aquaculture food systems in desert and arid countries’ organized by the FAO sub-regional office for North Africa from 13 to 15 October 2022 in Tunis, Tunisia. The workshop brought together experts from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia as well as FAO staff with the aim of developing a work programme for the development of the sub-sector. The experts discussed and developed three categories of intervention: (i) Expanding market opportunities for freshwater fish; (ii) Improving opportunities to expand freshwater aquaculture and inland fisheries production; (iii) Promoting business opportunities for youth and women in inland fisheries and aquaculture food systems. These programmes concept notes were put together in this business portfolio of investment and are addressed to potential donors seeking to financially support sustainable aquaculture and inland fisheries development in the arid lands of North African countries.
