Synopsis (short abstract) This paper results from a project to examine various development alternatives concerning fishing craft development in Kerala. The project, which was in operation from April 1981 to April 1983, was meant to provide the Kerala Government with information needed to make investment decisions concerning craft and engines. Specifically, the project examined whether the performance of Thanguvala canoes can be improved by motorising them with locally made engines; whether a new type of sailcraft ca n be developed to replace traditional dugout canoes; whether motorisation can improve the efficiency of small-mesh gillnetters; and whether a new type of engine-cum sail beachcraft can be developed to operate large-mesh driftnets. Fishing trials for project activities were held in co-operation with local fishermen and crew at villages near Quilon and Trivandrum. On behalf of BOB P. consultant Oyvind Guibrandsen provided technical assistance for executing the project. On behalf of the Govern ment of Kerala, Mr V G Joseph, Co-ordination Officer in the Directorate of Fisheries, provided counterpart assistance. The project was initially funded by the FAO/UNDP project RAS/77/044, “Small-Scale Fisheries Promotion in South East Asia”, and later by the FAO/SIDA project, GCP/RAS/040/SWE, “Development of Small-Scale Fisheries in the Bay of Bengal”. The RAS/77/044 project, which terminated in 1981, undertook factual surveys and documentation on small-scale fisheries to help research ers, government planners and investors.

    This report describes attempts to introduce modified and new types of small fishing craft in the State of Kerala India. Three new types were constructed and tested and one type, a beachlanding craft available on the east coast of India, was introduced. All the craft underwent commercial fishing trials. The work was carried out during I Wc)-90.1989-90. The project. on request from the Government of India. was funded to the tune of US $ 139.000 by FAO under its Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP). The Kerala State Cooperative Federation for Fisheries Development Limited (MATSYAFED) was designated as the government agency responsible for the project execution. The Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) provided technical support, equipment and monitory services to implement the project. Besides the authors, other persons actively engaged in the project work were officials ofthc MATSYAFED, officers and technicians of BOBP, managers and staff of two boatyards and. not least, the fi sherfolk. The Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) is a multi-agency regional fisheries programme which covers seven countries around the Bay of Bengal - Bangladesh. India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Sri Lanka. Thailand. The Programme plays a catalytic and consultative role: it develops, demonstrates and promotes new techniques. technologies or ideas to help improve the conditions of small-scale fisherfolk communities in membercountries.

    Traditional Marine Fishing Craft And Gear Of Orissa - BOBP/WP/24 1986

    In August and September 1980, a survey was carried out in the Balasore, Cuttack, Pun and Ganjam districts of Orissa, to obtain information on the type of traditional fishing craft and gear, their methods of operation, cost, and possibilities for improvement and introduction of new prototypes and innovations. All the important villages engaged in marine fisheries were visited. This working paper presents the results of the survey. A brief summary of the types of fishing craft and gear is fol lowed by detailed data on materials and construction of craft and gear. The document may serve as a guide for specific extension work among small-scale fishermen and also provide a basis for experiments to improve fishing craft and gear. The survey and this paper are an activity of the Project for Small-Scale Fisheries Developmentof the Bay of Bengal Programme. The project is funded by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organizati on of the United Nations (FAQ). The main goal of the project is to develop, demonstrate and promote technologies and methodologies to improve the conditions of small-scale fisherfolk in five countries that border the Bay of Bengal — Bangladesh, India, Malaysia Sri Lanka and Thailand.

    This paper describes eight new prototypes of beachlanding craft developed by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP). It also describes the technical trials of the craft with emphasis on surf crossing abilities. This working paper is a sequel to BOBP/WP/7, “Technical Trials of Beachcraft Prototypes in India” which described BOBP’s first trials of four prototypes.
