Synopsis (short abstract) This paper describes the developnient . technical trials, and fishing trials of larger plank—built outrigger canoes in Nias Island, Surnatera . Indonesia. The outrigger canoes were constructed during 1989. The technical and fishing trials were conducted during 1989 and 1990 in three villages in Nias Island. The purpose of the trials was to assess the technical and economic feasibilit\ of the new outrigger canoes and their acceptability to the fisherfolk. The project for development of outrigge r canoe fisheries and this paper which reports on it have been sponsored by the Bay of Bengal Programnic’s (BOBP) “Small-Scale Fisherfolk Communities in the Bay of Bengal” (GCP/RAS/118/MUL). The work was done in cooperation with the Provincial Fisheries Service of North Sumatera. Besides the authors, other BOBP and PFS officers, an FAO Consultant Boatbuilder, local carpenters and not least the fishermen were actively involved in the Project.

    This report gives an account of the successful attempts to develop and introduce a new type of outrigger canoe for the benefit of small-scale fisherfolk in Nias Island, North Sumatera, Indonesia. It summarizes the activities of canoe construction, training of carpenters, demonstration and long-term fishing trials and discusses the impact and prospects for further development. The work was undertaken from late 1988 till early 1993 as a subproject under BOBP’s “Small-Scale Fisherfolk Communit ies” project GCP/RAS/118/MUL. The subproject was channelled through the Provincial Fisheries Service (PFS) of North Sumatera but was, to a very large extent, an autonomous unit in Nias with a Field Assistant, Tafonaha Gulo, as the only staff. The Boatbuilder Consultant assisting in construction of prototype canoes and training of carpenters was M Savins, from Australia.

The Boatbuilder Consultant assisting in construction of prototype canoes and training of carpenters was O Gulbrandscn, from Norway.

    Developing and Introducing a Beachlanding Craft on the East Coast of India - BOBP/REP/54 1993

    This report reviews and analyzes the work of the Beachlanding Craft Development subproject of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP). It briefly describes the development of these craft and their introduction on the east coast of India, analyzes their present status and discusses the results. The report was prepared by a consultant with wide experience of fisheries in the Bay of Bengal region, on the basis of documentation on the subproject, published and unpublished, as well as impressions gat hered during field visits to fishing centres in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa during August 1992. Assistance received by him in carrying out the field visits from Mr. S. B. Sarma of the Andhra Pradesh Directorate of Fisheries and information provided by fisheries officials, fishermen and boatyards are gratefully acknowledged. The development of beachlanding craft was sponsored by BOBP’s “Development of Small-Scale Fisheries in the Bay of Bengal” (GCP/RAS/040/SWE), a project funded by SIDA (Swed ish International Development Authority) and “Small-Scale Fisherfolk Communities in the Bay of Bengal”(GCP/RAS/118/MUL), a project jointly funded by SIDA and DANIDA (Danish International Development Agency), both executed by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations).
