Synopsis (short abstract) This manual provides guidelines and descriptions of the field data collection methodology and procedures used to inventory and monitor forestry and other land use resources following the approach developed by the Support to National Forest Resources Monitoring and Assessment (NFMA) programme of the FAO. The methodology, based on countrywide sampling and field data collection as well as on remote sensing, has been applied since 2000 in several countries through national forest inventories, includ ing Bangladesh, Cameroon, Congo, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Lebanon, Nicaragua and the Philippines.

    The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), through its Pan Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) program, works in collaboration with country national programs in over 29 countries across the African continent to improve the varieties of beans available to the farmers through research. This promising practice factsheet focuses on the introduction of the Open Data Kit (ODK) in Uganda. ODK is one of the ICT platforms that have been taken up by the PABRA program. It is believed that ODK can revolutionize the way data is managed by ensuring the seamless collection, storage and analysis of data. With five key themes, (breeding, markets, nutrition, seed systems and capacity building) the operationalization of the ODK platform in Uganda in the last two years focused on working with the National Bean Program in using ODK to manage trial data aimed at releasing climate smart bean varieties that are multiple stress resistant and drought tolerant

    Conducting tablet-based field data collection with CSPro is a joint initiative of the Asian Development Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to support national statistics offices and line ministries to develop human capacities to conduct tablet-based field data collections for official statistics in the Asia and Pacific region for more robust, accurate and timely data. The adoption of tablet-based data collection methods, also referred to as Computer-assisted Personal Interviewing, is part of an overarching development in official statistics to adopt new cost-effective technologies to move from traditional pen-and-paper questionnaires to more cost-efficient, high quality and timely methods using electronic devices. This Handbook seeks to support this transition by providing step-by-step instruction and guidance to develop, test and run Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing field data collection using one of the free software’s currently available on the market – CSPro.
