Synopsis (short abstract) Games can help people learn about complex issues, make choices and adapt their actions as they observe the consequences of their choices.They allow adults and children to explore, safely, different scenarios that can generate a variety of outcomes depending on the choices they make as they play the game.Therefore, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) with support from the SWM Programme, developed this low-tech, multiplayer decision-making game to play with rural communities in the Republic of the Congo and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.This Manual explains the rules and materials needed to play the Kwinda Nyama game which tests players’ responses to different hunting scenarios with different rules.The SWM Programme is a major international initiative that aims to improve the conservation and sustainable use of wildlife in forest, savannah and wetland ecosystems. It is being funded by the European Union with co-funding from the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD). Projects are being piloted and tested with governments and communities in 17 participating countries. The initiative is coordinated by a dynamic consortium of four partners, namely the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

This publication is the first of the Innovation in Practice case-studies series produced by the SWM Programme, including technical, social, legal and institutional innovations. The first case study focuses on the partners (FAO, WCS, CIFOR-ICRAF and CIRAD) development and testing of innovative no-tech or low-tech games. Each needed to be simple and relatively quick to play, require only locally available and low cost materials, and be appropriate for players with low levels of literacy and numeracy, with little or no experience with multiplayer and role-playing games. These games can be played without technology, but they do not preclude the use of smart phones or laptop computers to capture and analyze the outcomes generated by the players. Role-playing games are fun, engaging and valuable for social learning where communities can devise strategies and learn to avoid undesired outcomes.This first case study is going to walk you through the different games developed and played in the different sites, unrevelling the importance of communities to take part in those and lessons learnt.

L'organisation Wildlife Conservation Society, avec le soutien du Programme de gestion durable de la faune sauvage (SWM Programme), ont donc mis au point un jeu de prise de décision multijoueurs de faible technicité pour jouer avec les communautés rurales.Ce manuel explique les règles et le matériel nécessaire afin de tester les stratégies des joueurs face à différents scénarios de chasse avec différentes règles.Le Programme de gestion durable de la faune sauvage (SWM Programme) est une initiative internationale qui vise à améliorer la conservation et l’utilisation durable de la faune sauvage dans les écosystèmes forestiers, de savane et des zones humides. Il est financé par l’Union européenne et cofinancé par le Fonds français pour l’environnement mondial et l’Agence française de développement. Des projets sont actuellement pilotés et testés en collaboration avec les gouvernements et les communautés des 17 pays participants. L’initiative est coordonnée par un consortium dynamique de quatre partenaires, notamment l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture, le Centre de recherche forestière internationale-Centre mondial d’agroforesterie, le Centre français de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement et la Société pour la conservation de la faune sauvage.

These guidelines provide both operational and technical guidance on approaches in countries practising regulated hunting. When and where well-managed, this hunting industry brings considerable conservation benefits and socio-economic profits. However, like any sector, the hunting sector is in need of improvement in respect to nature conservation, rural socio-economy and cultural livelihoods and lifestyles. By raising the level of professionalism in its administration, it is expected that the per formance and quality of services of the whole sector will improve. Good administration is obviously crucial for promoting best practices and discouraging the others.
