Synopsis (short abstract) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s work on environment statistics provides data to support evidencebased decision-making for sustainableagrifood systems. This area of work focuses particularly on monitoring critical aspects of sustainable agriculture in relation to inputs and natural resources use. This flyer gives a snapshot of FAO’s work and activities in this domain.

    The Asia and Pacific Commission on Agricultural Statistics (APCAS) is a statutory body of FAO. APCAS brings together senior statistics officials from FAO member countries of the Asia and Pacific region, who are responsible for the development of agricultural statistics in their respective countries. The APCAS report notes the details of the Commission meeting. Fifty-two technical documents, including an update on the situation of agricultural statistics and priority areas for FAO interventions in the region, were discussed. The report also highlights the key recommendations made by the Commission.

    The primary objective of this PDF Activity is the preparation of a Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) to identify the principal shared problems and their root causes, as well as national, regional and, particularly, transboundary priorities in the region. This will provide the basis for the subsequent development of an agreed regional Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the solution of the identified problems, and the development of the Full Project. The project will maintain close linkage s with mechanisms developed to address land and water-related environmental issues in the major river basins draining to the LME (Senegal, Volta) and the neighbouring GEF International Waters projects (Guinea Current LME, Benguela Current LME). It is closely related to the regional implementation of the Global Programme of Action for Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities, relevant components and protocols of the Abidjan Convention and those of the Accra Ministerial Decl aration.
