Synopsis (short abstract) Livestock are terrestrial, domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to provide traction or produce commodities such as meat, milk, eggs and hides. They contribute to diverse agri-food systems globally, playing many roles for different groups of people. From the perspective of the sustainability of the global livestock sector, there are four important and interrelated aspects: food and nutrition security; livelihoods and growth; health and animal welfare; and climate and natural resource use. Sustainable livestock are at the interface of these four topics, which provide the structure of the breakout sessions in the 10th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture. This brochure has been prepared by FAO to help guide discussions during the Forum in general and specifically during the four breakout sessions. First an overview of global livestock sector dynamics is presented, followed by four sections covering breakout session topics and discussing challenges, opportunities and possible areas for policy action. Sustainable livestock is then discussed in relation to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Finally, the diversity of global livestock systems is presented as a global map showing the distribution of the main systems.

Africa Sustainable Livestock 2050 (ASL2050) aims to engage stakeholders to develop agreed scenarios of livestock in 2050 which will provide guidance to refine, if need be, the different policies currently affecting the livestock sector and make them consistent and coherent. Long term scenarios will assist in prioritizing actions to effectively address emerging livestock-environment and livestock-public health challenges.

Egypt's society and economy will grow swiftly and transform extensively in the next three decades. Along this transformative process, the demand for animal source food will exponentially increase and livestock is likely to become the most important sector of agriculture. In order to be prepared to take action to ensure sustainable livestock production and value chains in 2050, this report provides hints fo the feasible future scenarios for livestock in the coutry and how to be prepared to ensure sustaible livestock production. This report portrays country possibile livestock futures: it sheds light on emerging challenges and uncertain disruptive events associated with a transformed livestock sector, and identifies priority areas for action to take today for a sustainable livestock in the long-term.

Ethiopian decision makers have to grapple with so many uncertainties from multiple directions that prioritizing interventions and holding a straight course prove a daunting task. In the next decades, population growth, urbanization, smart technological innovations and adoptions, increased movements of people and goods, not to mention climate change, will thoroughly transform Ethiopian society, in ways that are often unpredictable. This report looks out to 2050 and presents alternative scenarios, or plausible portrays, of the future of the cattle sector in Ethiopia. The government of Ethiopia, with support from FAO and USAID, engaged a multitude of stakeholders in a conversation around the knowns and unknowns of the future, such as past and projected trends of societal and livestock dynamics, current policy priorities, technology uptake and institutional changes.
