Synopsis (short abstract) In 1950, approximately 70% of the Panamanian territory was covered with forests, a figure that fell to 60% of the area in 2012, and which is still decreasing. Indigenous people are the main forest inhabitants and they play an invaluable role in monitoring and conserving forests, a fundamental resource for biodiversity and food security. To strengthen the natural resource management capacities of indigenous territories, FAO, with support of the UN-REDD programme, implemented a community forest-monitoring project. The project had as strong focus on capacity development of members of the indigenous communities. The training included the preparation of flight plans, arming and flying drones, image processing and mapping with high-resolution images. The main objective of the project was to identify changes in specific points of forest cover undergoing deforestation and degradation processes, to monitor the status of crops and to monitor invasions of territory. The introduction of drones made the whole process a lot easier.

    Rice Crop Manager and RiceAdvice are two decision support tools that were developed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) for rice crop management. The web based tool (Rice Crop Manager) and the android application (RiceAdvice) both aim at providing smallholder rice-farmers with timely field specific guidelines for crop and nutrient management practices. The tools provide information at the start of the season and for in-season practices such as weeding and fertilizer application. The guidelines are generated each new season, in order to remain as accurate as possible. Rice Crop Manager is a free decision-making tool accessible through the web browser for Windows, Android and Linux. It can be used on a smartphone, tablet or computer. RiceAdvice is a free application for Android and an Android-based smartphone or tablet is needed for its use.

    CABI and FRI’s Upscaling Technologies in Agriculture through Knowledge and Extension (UPTAKE) project uses SMS messages to increase awareness and adoption of agricultural technologies in maize value chains. The project seeks to strengthen the adoption of improved maize varieties. Continuous learning and improvement of the SMS campaign strategy is at the foundation of the success of the project. Lessons from farmers, extension agents and the entire maize value chain are being incorporated in the system regularly.

    AgriFin Mobile, a program implemented by Mercy Corps, facilitated the partnership between Econet, the largest Mobile Network Operator in Zimbabwe, and the Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) to develop a bundled product for smallholder farmers. The bundle is called the ZFU EcoFarmer Combo and includes weather index insurance, funeral insurance, ZFU Membership contribution and access to Ecofarmer advisory services.
