Synopsis (short abstract) CABI and FRI’s Upscaling Technologies in Agriculture through Knowledge and Extension (UPTAKE) project uses SMS messages to increase awareness and adoption of agricultural technologies in maize value chains. The project seeks to strengthen the adoption of improved maize varieties. Continuous learning and improvement of the SMS campaign strategy is at the foundation of the success of the project. Lessons from farmers, extension agents and the entire maize value chain are being incorporated in the system regularly.

    Grameen Foundation’s breakthrough FarmerLink program combines satellite data and farm data collected by mobile-equipped field agents to help coconut farmers in the Philippines, to increase field agents to help coconut farmers in the Philippines to increase productivity, deal with crop pests and diseases, cope with extreme weather and increase the sustainability of their farms. Grameen Foundation developed FarmerLink using human-centered design and in collaboration with partner organizations and their trusted network of field agents. Its design and delivery enables smallholder farmers, to overcome usability challenges in working with mobile services and offers access to precious, previously unavailable information.

    ‘UshauriKilimo’(http://ushaurikilimo.org) is a Swahili word from ‘Ushauri’ and ‘Kilimo’ which means ‘advisory’ and ‘agriculture’ respectively. ‘UshauriKilimo’ is an information system for agricultural advisory services. It is an agro-advisory and extension service system that allows any actor in the agricultural sector to ask for advisory services to an agriculture extension officer using either the web or a mobile phone. The mobile and web based advisory information system for farmers was developed in collaboration with the Kilosa Community Radio, using participatory action research to ensure the improved extension services would correspond to the needs of the end‐users. The Web‐based Farmers Advisory Information System (M-FAIS) and Mobile-based Farmers Advisory Information Systems (W-FAIS) were released for public use in January 2015, after an awareness raising campaign conducted in Kilosa District of Tanzania.

    AgriFin Mobile, a program implemented by Mercy Corps, facilitated the partnership between Econet, the largest Mobile Network Operator in Zimbabwe, and the Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) to develop a bundled product for smallholder farmers. The bundle is called the ZFU EcoFarmer Combo and includes weather index insurance, funeral insurance, ZFU Membership contribution and access to Ecofarmer advisory services.
