    La production agricole a de nouveau fortement chuté en Afghanistan du fait de l'insuffisance des précipitations en certains endroits et de la sécheresse dans d'autres. Il s'agit là d'un véritable revers pour la solide reprise constatée ces deux dernières années après une longue période de sécheresse catastrophique et de mauvaises récoltes dans la plupart du pays. Les cultures de céréales non irriguées, en particulier de blé et d'orge, ont été compromises par des précipitations inférieures à la moyenne et irrégulières, ainsi que par le fort recul des superficies ensemencées par rapport à l'an dernier. Des maladies phytosanitaires, comme le souné et la rouille brune, ainsi que les mauvaises herbes ont compromis de vastes superficies sous céréales, en particulier dans le nord, tandis que les maladies fongiques et virales ont dévasté les vergers dans le centre et le centre-est de l'Afghanistan. La distribution en certains endroits du pays de semences diluées inadéquates s ans mise à l'essai préalable, s'est révélée catastrophique pour de nombreux agriculteurs; bon nombre d'entre eux ont utilisé les cultures ainsi obtenues comme fourrage, car elles n'ont pas produit de grains.
