No results found.This technical paper is an initial step towards exploring the potential identification of other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) in inland waters where fisheries and fisheries-related activities take place. It forms part of the FAO Blue Transformation roadmap, as highlighted in the practical guidance document on Fisheries OECMs A Handbook for Identifying, Evaluating, and Reporting Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures in Marine Fisheries. Part 1 provides an overview of the role and potential contribution of inland fisheries management to biodiversity conservation and how area-based fisheries management in inland waters fits within the OECM framework. The subsequent chapters, which make up Part 2, offer region-specific information for Latin America, Africa and Asia, presenting examples of area-based management in inland fisheries that provide context-specific insights. These examples aim to support the assessment and recognition of potential for inland fisheries-related OECMs in each region. -

No results found.Nature's contribution to society is fundamental and people who contribute to its protection should be paid for that. This encourages farmers to engage in an ongoing process to transform land use into A sustainable process. Payment for ecosystem services is strategic to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss in the Atlantic Forest, an important global biodiversity hotspot. The objective of this article is to present the Atlantic Forest Connection Project, a government project in the State of São Paulo-Brazil, which aims to promote connectivity of forest remnants through public policies and payment for environmental services integrating protection of biodiversity,water production and agroecology. The Paraíba River Valley, located in the Paraíba Sul River basin, State of São Paulo, is one of the regions that benefit from this program. The region has 2,26 thousand inhabitants and the water produced supplies the metropolitan regions: Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The remaining vegetation of the Atlantic Forest is very fragmented, with extensive conserved areas, which limits the activity of fauna in addition to extensive cattle raising, which occupies about 50% of the productive areas in most municipalities. The Atlantic Forest Connection Project in the Paraíba Valley has actions in three directions: 1) investigation, management and monitoring (biodiversity and carbon), 2) restoration ecology in the Paraíba river basin, 3) sustainability of areas protected by law and actions for change the landscape matrix at the expense of the economic activities of farmers in conservation buffer zones. In this last action, farmers protect and restore the forest by converting their activities to a more sustainable land use and, in this way, they are compensated. In 2019, the payments for environmental services program benefited more than 700 farmers in 13 municipalities, and these payments helped to protect and restore approximately 20,718 hectares under the Atlantic Forest Biome. No results found.Between 29 November and 3 December, 2017, Cyclone Ockhi devastated hundreds of lives and livelihoods of coastal fishing communities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, India. This study assesses the impacts of the cyclone on fishing communities and the mechanisms in place at the local, national and international levels to address disaster risks and sea safety in small-scale fisheries, using a human rights-based approach.In line with the Sendai Framework 2015-2030 and the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries, the study recommends applying “relief-development continuum” and “build back better” concepts to the management of disaster risks in order to save lives and to reduce damage to fisheries assets and livelihoods. -

No results found.The ENACT course provides an introduction to the practice of nutrition education. This is a “blended learning” course pitched at undergraduate level, requiring a mix of independent work and tutorial contact. Two CDs are available: one for students and one for tutors. The tutors’ materials include copies of all the students’ materials, as well as a Tutor’s Guide, some extra optional materials for some units, and a “Full Answer Key for Tutors” which gives answers and comments on all the activities and guidelines for marking assessed questions. There are also two more formal tests with Answer Keys. The Students’ materials include introductions and ten-and-a-half course units, each containing a Student’s Book with a unit glossary at the end and a set of Unit Resources, including some audio and video files. The course is based on a mix of independent work using the Student’s Book and Unit Resources, “Outside activities” which explore aspects of real life, including a mini Nutrition Education project, and tutorials. Two tutorials are foreseen for each unit. -

Since that time, the appreciation of pollinators has grown, alongside the realization that we stand to lose them. But our knowledge and understanding of crop pollination, pollinator biology, and best management practices has also expanded over this time. This volume is the second of two “compendiums for practitioners”, sharing expert knowledge on all dimensions of crop pollination in both temperate and tropical zones. The focus in this second volume is on management, study and research tools and techniques.
