Synopsis (short abstract) Rural communities of Pakistan were among the hardest hit by the devastating floods of June–August 2022. The disaster wiped out 1.7 million hectares of agricultural land and 800 000 heads of livestock, pushing millions of rural households into poverty and food insecurity. Around 14.6 million people are in need of food security and agricultural assistance. Restoring the livelihoods and food production of rural households is fundamental to the humanitarian response. The document provides an overview of the ongoing response of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in line with national priorities and the revised floods response plan (September 2022–May 2023).

    Between January and March 2023, Tropical Cyclone Freddy – the most energetic cyclone on record – and Tropical Storm Cheneso battered Malawi, Madagascar and Mozambique. At the same time, Zambia experienced destructive storms and torrential rains that resulted in severe flooding, affecting large swaths of inhabited and cropped lands. Critical social and economic infrastructure, fisheries equipment, livestock and hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops have been lost. As a result of these climate shocks, the crop production, food security, nutrition and livelihoods of some of the most vulnerable households have been severely jeopardized. Urgent assistance is needed rapidly to restore agricultural production.

    The lives and livelihoods of around 3.3 million people in Pakistan, mostly living in rural areas, have been significantly disrupted by this year’s massive monsoon driven floods. Their homes have been destroyed as well as schools, hospitals, nearly 1.8 million ha of agricultural land, livestock assets, forests and critical agricultural infrastructure. In addition, some 800 000 livestock were lost. Through SFERA, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000, enabling FAO to not only extend its response to the floods in all four provinces, but also to provide critical support to restore the livelihoods of flood-affected farmers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. This will not only help them resume food production activities but also enhance their resilience against future shocks.

    Northeastern Nigeria: Humanitarian Response Plan 2023 2023

    The insurgency in northeastern Nigeria remains a significant driver of the humanitarian crisis. Severe flooding across the country in 2022 devastated crops and livestock. Price spikes are further hindering vulnerable households’ access to food. By mid-year, 4.35 million people are projected to be acutely food insecure during the lean season in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. Around 80 percent of northeastern Nigerians live in rural areas and depend on agriculture to provide for their families. Restoring their livelihoods is crucial to the humanitarian response.
