The project "Governance Strengthening for the Management and Protection of Coastal & Marine Biodiversity in key ecological areas and the implementation of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries” in Argentina, implemented between May 2017 and March 2024, focused on improving the management and protection of marine biodiversity and promoting the ecosystem approach to fishing. The final evaluation, carried out with the participation of various actors, highlighted the high relevance and coherence of the project, as well as the institutional strengthening and development of technical capacities. The creation of synergies, instances of dialogue and high-quality lasting results also stands out. It is recommended to replicate this successful model in future projects in the region, ensuring institutional sustainability and the inclusion of transversal perspectives such as gender from the project design. It is recommended to adjust the governance and internal communication mechanisms, and better disseminate the products produced. -
DocumentFinal Evaluation of the Project “Sustainable Community-Based Management and Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystems in Cameroon”
Project evaluation - Main report
2018Also available in:
Mangrove ecosystems provide a wide range of resources and services for people's livelihoods, which at the same time give rise to strong economic, social and demographic pressure. To address these challenges, the GEF project "Sustainable community-based management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems in Cameroon” developed strategic documents on mangroves; created platforms to promote dialogue among stakeholders; produced information on the status of mangroves in Cameroon and established a permanent monitoring system for determining changes in these ecosystems; and contributed to the launch and advancement to the final stages of processes for the classification of protected areas. While the project contributed to several outcomes at institutional level and it also increased community awareness on the importance of mangrove ecosystems, it did not achieve the expected results in support to long-term sustainability of local communities’ livelihoods. Moving forward, to see impacts there is still the need for a consolidation phase both at community and institutional level. -
Book (series)Final evaluation of the project “Integrated management of mangrove and associated wetlands and coastal forest ecosystems in the Republic of the Congo”
GCP/PRC/007/GFF
2019Also available in:
The project "Integrated management of mangroves and associated wetlands and coastal forest ecosystems in the Republic of the Congo" was implemented between July 2013 and December 2017 by the Government of the Republic of the Congo and FAO. The main phase of the final evaluation, which took place between July and August 2017, covered all the activities carried out under the different components. The evaluation recognized the relevance of the intervention given by its effort to develop and promote a community-based forest management system in the Congo. The project contributed to strengthening the national legislative and institutional framework on mangrove ecosystems, yet additional efforts are still necessary to mobilize the resources needed to implement the strategy and the plan developed as part of the project. At the time of the evaluation, no concrete activities had been implemented at community level, nevertheless the project contributed to having good awareness among communities on the importance of mangrove ecosystems.
