    FAO initiated the project Strengthening Monitoring, Assessment and Reporting on Sustainable Forest Management in Asia (GCP/INT/988/JPN) in January 2006. The five-year project is funded by the Government of Japan. The main objective of this project is to facilitate development of harmonized forest related national monitoring, assessment and reporting (MAR) systems in the Asia-Pacific region to contribute directly to the improvement of sustainable forest management (SFM) regimes. An allied objec tive of the project is to enhance the use of the MAR information in national decision-making, formulation of effective forest policies, and sustainable forest management and planning.

    This Report survey has been prepared with the main aim of collecting information on the National Forest Inventory (NFI) in the Asia Pacific countries in order to facilitate the fulfilment of the harmonization in the national forest monitoring, assessment and reporting. The information collected thanks to the collaboration of all the participants will be compiled and analyzed, forming the basis of the background documentation for the forthcoming workshop on Broadening, Harmonization and Cross-Sec toral Integration of National Forest Inventories in Asia Pacific Region. It will help understanding the range of fields (information) and variables collected in the framework of the National Forest Inventories, their main purposes and applications, representing a valuable food for discussion and activities of the forthcoming workshop and therefore highly contributing to the fulfilment of the objectives of the overall project

    The Workshop on Monitoring, Assessment, and Reporting for Sustainable Forest Management in the South Pacific Region was implemented at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, Fiji from 10 to 12 October 2007. Its main objective was to strengthen the system of monitoring, assessment, and reporting (MAR) for sustainable forest management (SFM) in the South Pacific countries. Various technical aspects of MAR were presented and discussed. The workshop recommended the strengthening of regional collaboration with countries and related organizations for harmonizing and broadening MAR, including the formulation of a long-term umbrella plan for the South Pacific countries on MAR and development of national/regional networks.
