Synopsis (short abstract) Outbreak of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in poultry has been suspected in Indonesia during the preceeding month. The recent outbreak in Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) appeared to be caused by H7. Although the number of outbreaks appeared to be falling like last year, the need for vigilance to find potentially new cases and their rapid isolation remains a high priority. Biosecurity in domestic poultry production systems must be checked again during this period

    Outbreaks of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in poultry were reported in Thailand, Viet Nam and Cambodia, and the first human case was reported in Cambodia during the preceding month. Before Lunar New Year day on 9 February, movement of poultry and poultry products was increased in the region. As a result, H5N1 virus might have spread in domestic poultry. The need for vigilance to find new cases and rapid isolation of infected or suspected flocks from susceptible poultry and humans are high priorities. Biosecurity of domestic poultry to prevent introduction of H5N1 virus is even more important during this period to avoid spread.

    A few outbreaks of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) were reported in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Viet Nam during the preceding month. One year has passed since the first HPAI case was officially reported by the Republic of Korea to OIE on 12 December 2003. It is important to pay attention to the biosecurity of domestic poultry to prevent infection, and maintain vigilance and enhance early warning in order to detect every additional case, to ensure effective control of outbreak s and to minimise the risk to humans.
