    Sustainable land management (SLM) practices are increasingly well known, yet barriers to implementation limit their contribution to addressing land degradation challenges. Weak governance and institutions are commonly recognised as hindrances to the adoption of SLM practices. This report presents country cases from the Resilient Food Systems programme which highlight some of the successful SLM project activities undertaken, the policy and institutional strengthening methods key to enabling them and valuable lessons learned. The innovative approaches to improving weak governance have demonstrated positive impacts for both the environment and livelihoods of rural communities.

    In many developing countries the adoption of climate sustainable practices is hindered by resource and risk barriers. This paper assesses the interactions between participation in Malawi’s largest public works programme, the Malawi Social Action Fund (MASAF), and three widely promoted climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices. The underlying hypotheses to be tested are: (a) that participation in the MASAF programme reduce both the budget and the risk constraints to the adoption of sustainable management practices; and (b) the joint treatment effect of MASAF and CSA increases household farms’ productivity and welfare. Drawing on three waves of national panel household survey data, we find that participation in MASAF significantly increases the probability that farm households adopt all the CSA practices considered for this study.

It aims to help decision makers at a number of levels (including political administrators and natural resource managers) to understand the different options that are available for planning, policies and investments and the practices that are suitable for making different agricultural sectors, landscapes and food systems more climate-smart. This sourcebook is a reference tool for planners, practitioners and policy makers working in agriculture, forestry and fisheries at national and subnational levels. The sourcebook indicates some of the necessary ingredients required to achieve a climate-smart approach to the agricultural sectors, including existing options and barriers.
