Synopsis (short abstract) This publication aims to inspire budding entrepreneurs in Africa to consider business opportunities in agriculture and agro-industry, broadly defined. It is intended to be a promotional tool, as a sort of call to arms, particularly for women and youth. It also aims to serve as an educational tool and knowledge product in business schools and entrepreneurship incubator programmes for case study-based learning on operating an agribusiness or agro-industry enterprise in Africa. The publication offers guidance to agripreneurs on how to overcome or avoid potential pitfalls and learn from the paths set out by the 12 agripreneurs, whose stories reflect real-life experiences of agribusiness development in Africa. It should be seen as a collection of resources on agripreneurship, focused on these four topical areas: scale, women, youth, and challenging environments, while providing guiding advice for agripreneurs and policy-makers. In addition to educating entrepreneurs, it is important to highlight the fundamental role of policy-makers in shaping the enabling environment for agripreneurship. In this context, the publication aims to provide concrete policy recommendations on how to improve the enabling environment for agripreneurship, based on the advice of the 12 agripreneurs featured here. The aim is to guide policy-makers to improve these targeted areas, and inspire them to do so by providing accounts of successful agripreneurs who have built businesses with positive economic, social and environmental impacts on national development.

    This report aims at providing an overview of the agribusiness incubation and acceleration landscape in Africa. The study is a joint effort between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Agripreneurship Alliance. The study mapped and analysed over 430 enterprise support organizations (ESOs) from across the continent. The high-level analysis was complemented by deep dives of incubation programmes implemented by 16 ESOs. The key messages and findings from the study were shared with key stakeholders through five subregional webinars organized over the course of 2020–2021, gathering inputs from over 1 000 individuals representing enterprise support organizations, small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurs and policymakers. The findings and recommendations presented in this report provide practical guidance to policymakers, practitioners and development partners seeking to maximize the impact of agribusiness incubation programmes in Africa.

    Rethinking agripreneurship: Impact of personal initiative agripreneurship training on improving the abilities of African youth to start and manage successful agribusinesses 2023

    Long-term job frustration underlines Africa’s most pressing issues such as distress migration and peace and security, making it the number one policy preoccupation for policy makers in the continent. With limited resources and unlimited problems, policy makers are forced to prioritize interventions that will achieve the biggest impact on tackling youth unemployment. In this regard, agripreneurship can turn job seekers into job creators and help young agripreneurs not to fall back into unemployment again. However, not all business training programmes are effective and not all trainees benefit. Evidence has been mixed concerning the impact of traditional business training in enabling youth to develop viable businesses, including in the agriculture sector. This policy brief presents evidence on the impact of Personal Initiative Agripreneurship training titled “Agripreneurship 101” on achieving success for youth-led agribusinesses.

    Training course material for climate-wise women agents 2024

    The training course material for climate wise women agents (CWWAs) has been launched in Jordan under the project Building Resilience to Cope with Climate Change in Jordan Through Improving Water Use Efficiency in the Agriculture Sector (BRCCJ). CWWAs will be trained as master trainers in state-of-the-art techniques for climate adaptation and efficient domestic use of water. The CWWA will be responsible for further training four hundred women to become climate wise women (CWW) across the project’s four target governorates.Based on a comprehensive review of the project area and training needs assessment of climate adaptation challenges faced by women in the project target area, the BRCCJ project has designed the course material to cover chapters on gender and climate change, international bindings related to climate change, climate change mitigation and adaptation in agriculture, climate adaptive irrigation technologies, efficient use of domestic water, soil management, budgeting and climate adaptive agribusiness plans, and approaches for climate change adaptation advocacy.The training course material will enable women in the project’s target area to become climate-wise and resilient. Additionally, the business-related topics will enable the climate wise women agents (CWWAs) to support enhanced production systems, guide women towards adding value to their products, and foster entrepreneurship at the household and community levels.The sections in each chapter contain the learning objectives, expected outcomes, sequence of activities, training topics, the required training materials, feedback on training content and its delivery, and resource materials. This course material will guide the participants of climate adaptive agriculture through providing training, training material, training topics, technical contents, and practical demonstrations to strengthen climate resilience at the household and community level.
