Synopsis (short abstract) This publication explains how Codex and the Committee for Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses worked over several years to develop the Codex nutrient reference values for protein, 13 vitamins and 6 minerals in the Codex guidelines for nutrition labelling. Nutrient reference values (NRVs) are a set of values used in nutrition labelling; they are derived from authoritative recommendations for daily nutrient intake. This publication documents the process and decisions involved in reviewing the Codex NRVs for protein, vitamins and minerals and provides a valuable record of many years of original and complex technical work. The Codex Alimentarius, or "Food Code" is a collection of standards, guidelines and codes of practice adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The Commission, also known as CAC, is the central part of the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme and was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO), to protect consumer health and promote fair practices in food trade. Drawing from primary evidence from several countries and one region that historically managed their own healthy food data and reported on national nutrient intake values, the review, which ended in 2016, will play a role in informing the general population about healthy eating for the next 10-20 years and forms the basis for establishing a suite of required NRVs for more specific population groups, the first of which are older infants and young children.

    The need for developing suitable feeds based on locally available inexpensive ingredients has been widely recognized. Since lack of trained personnel is the main constraint in the development of fish feed technology in developing countries, the FAO/UNDP Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) organized a special training course in fish feed technology at the College of Fisheries, University of Washington, Seattle, with a view to forming a small corps of fish feed specialists wh o could then be the focal points for future feed development programmes in their respective countries. The first report of the training course was presented in the report ADCP /REP/79/8. This present volume represents the edited texts of lectures presented by different specialists. Some additional material has been included for more complete coverage of the subject. Together, these texts may be considered to constitute a manual on fish feed technology, even though they were not prepared for that purpose. Twenty-six papers are included, under the general headings: (1) Digestion, physiology and anatomy; (2) nutritional bioenergetics; (3) nutritional biochemistry; (4) feedstuffs; (5) feed formulation; (6) feed manufacturing technology; (7) practical diets; and (8) quality control. Appendices include conversion tables, electrical data, and details on pelletability of selective feedstuffs, pellet die specifications, and equipment requirements for an 8 ton an hour feed mill.

    Review of derivation methods for dietary intake reference values for older infants and young children

    This report was prepared to provide scientific advice to the Codex Committee on Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) on the details of dietary intake reference values (DIRVs) for protein and 24 micronutrients for older infants (6–12 months) and young children (12–36 months) in the publications of six recognized authoritative scientific bodies (RASBs) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). These publications were previously used to select DIRVs as the basis for Codex nutrient reference values–requirements (NRV-R) for the general population.The scientific advice includes an assessment of the salient similarities and differences of methods used to derive the DIRVs. Ten methods were identified and grouped into three categories ranked according to discrete approach and associated level of scientific rigour. The three categories presented, are proposed as suitable for inclusion in the general principles for establishment of NRVs-R for older infants and young children. The outcomes of the report contributes to FAO Strategic Objective for Better Nutrition and to SDG 2 (End hunger, acheive food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture).
