Synopsis (short abstract) The conflict in Yemen has escalated dramatically since mid-March 2015 and the country is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. A major food security emergency is ongoing with more than 50 percent of the population – 14.4 million people – unable to meet their daily food needs.

    Yemen is facing the largest food security emergency in the world. Without immediate action, the situation is likely to worsen in 2017. An estimated 17.1 million people are food insecure and struggling to feed themselves – an increase of 3 million in 7 months – according to preliminary results from the Emergency Food Security and Nutrition Assessment (EFSNA). This includes 7.3 million people who are severely food insecure.

    FAO entered into an agreement with the Copperbelt University (CBU) for the implementation of an assessment methodology for Kitwe and its city region food system (CRFS). This entailed the coordination and implementation of country level activities in Kitwe as one of the pilot cities in Zambia – the other being Lusaka. The project examined current and future constraints affecting productivity, production and access to markets of local and regional food value chains, and the implication of farming practices on natural resources and the environment with the purpose of understanding better how to make the CRFS more sustainable and resilient, and improve the livelihoods of rural and urban dwellers now and in the future. In order to promote local ownership, the process was highly participatory. Specifically, it aimed to foster inclusive multi-stakeholder dialogue processes in order to support local governments and other multiple stakeholders in taking informed decisions on food planning and to enhance synergies, reduce costs and prioritise investments.

    More than twenty years ago, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations contributed to the growing recognition of the role of pollination in agricultural production, with the publication of “The Pollination of Cultivated Plants in the Tropics”. Since that time, the appreciation of pollinators has grown, alongside the realization that we stand to lose them. But our knowledge and understanding of crop pollination, pollinator biology, and best management practices has also expanded over this time. This volume is the second of two “compendiums for practitioners”, sharing expert knowledge on all dimensions of crop pollination in both temperate and tropical zones. The focus in this second volume is on management, study and research tools and techniques.
