Synopsis (short abstract) This publication is a compilation of statistics of the numbers of people employed annually in commercial and subsistence fishing, operating in freshwater, brackishwater and marine areas, and in aquaculture production activities. Statistics are presented for the period 1970-1997. Starting with the data for 1990, wherever possible, data for employment in aquaculture production and for female employment are shown separately. / La présente publication est une compilation de statistiques du nombre de personnes employées sur base annuelle dans la pèche commerciale et de subsistance, qui opèrent dans les eaux intérieures, saumâtres et marines, et dans la production aquacole. Les données sont présentées pour la période 1970-1997. A partir de 1990, dans la mesure du possible, les données des personnes travaillant dans fa production de l'aquaculture et celles qui ont trait à l'emploi féminin sont présentées séparément. / Esta publicación es una compilación de las estadísticas anuales del número de personas que trabajan en la pesca comercial y de subsistencia. operando en las aguas internas, salobres y marinas. y en la producción de acuicultura. Los datos se proporcionan por el periodo 1970-1997.     Promoting policies and investments that support the creation of decent employment opportunities in rural areas is crucial to generating livelihoods for the world’s poor. Rural people depend on agriculture and their own labour to earn a living; yet, rural employment opportunities are often scarce, informal, hazardous and poorly remunerated. To meet the Sustainable Development Goals and eradicate poverty and hunger by 2030, FAO works to build lasting policy changes that foster rural employment. B y supporting the development of strategies and programmes that create more and better jobs, FAO helps governments stimulate both the agricultural and the rural, non-farm economies. This includes promoting the application of international labour standards, particularly for eliminating child labour in agriculture, and partnering with national stakeholders to build human capital by improving access to vocational and entrepreneurial training and strengthening the capacity of rural organizations. FA O also helps countries address the root causes of distress migration by boosting decent employment opportunities in rural areas, while building resilience and risk management mechanisms to protect rural livelihoods.
