No results found.The 2018 edition of The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries (SoMFi 2018), the flagship publication of the GFCM, provides a comprehensive overview of regional and subregional trends in Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries. Bringing together data and indicators submitted by GFCM contracting and cooperating non-contracting parties on stock status, national catches, fleet and socio-economic aspects as well as information obtained from other sources, SoMFi 2018 aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to-date information to a wide audience and support decision-making in fisheries. SoMFi 2018 is divided into eight sections. The first analyses the current composition of the fishing fleet, including information on fleet capacity, vessel types and age classes. Next comes a detailed breakdown of overall capture fishery production with comparisons of the latest figures to data from previous years, highlighting significant changes and trends. The report then looks at what this means for regional economies and for the livelihoods of the people who depend on the fisheries sector. As small-scale fisheries make up a large majority of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries, they receive special focus. SoMFi 2018 also provides the most detailed assessment yet of the state of fishery resources in the region. It shows the current status of the stocks, including those most at risk from overfishing, and looks at related issues like discards and incidental catches of vulnerable species. The report then highlights GFCM’s strategic efforts to build long-term sustainability, as it works with its stakeholders to sustainably manage fisheries and improve coastal livelihoods across the region. Finally, SoMFi 2018 concludes with an overview of the important role fisheries have to play in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, maintaining healthy ecosystems and productive fisheries. -

Africa is facing a food crisis of unprecedented proportions. Millions are expected to be at risk of worsening hunger in the near future due to the rippling effects of the war in Ukraine, which are compounding the devastating impacts that conflicts, climate variability and extremes, economic slowdowns and downturns, and the aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic are having on the most vulnerable. In this context, social and gender inequalities are also on the rise, with women and girls being among the most affected by these shocks.Despite efforts made in several countries, the African continent is not on track to meet the food security and nutrition targets of the Sustainable Development Goal 2 on Zero Hunger for 2030, and certainly the Malabo targets of ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2025. The most recent estimates show that nearly 282 million people in Africa (about 20 percent of the population) were undernourished in 2022, an increase of 57 million people since the COVID-19 pandemic began. About 868 million people were moderately or severely food-insecure and more than one-third of them – 342 million people – were severely food-insecure.The present edition of the report presents the latest analysis of the prevalence and trends in undernourishment, food insecurity, and malnutrition. In addition, it includes, for the first time, estimates of the cost and affordability of a healthy diet, which are useful indicators of people’s economic access to nutritious foods and healthy diets.The deterioration of the food security situation and the lack of progress towards the WHO global nutrition targets make it imperative for countries to step up their efforts ifthey are to achieve a world without hunger and malnutrition by 2030. The call for greater action remains true in view of the projected lower rate of economic growth, high general andfood price inflation, and raising borrowing costs on domestic and international markets since 2022. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical studyIntegración de sistemas de irrigación y acuicultura en África occidental: conceptos, prácticas y potencial. 2010Este volumen contiene documentos de contexto y ponencias presentadas en el Taller FAO-ADRAO sobre Integración de sistemas de irrigación y acuicultura (IIA) celebrado en Bamako, Malí, del 4 al 7 de noviembre de 2003, así como las conclusiones de las misiones de expertos de la FAO sobre la IIA en la región de África occidental. El fundamento del desarrollo de la IIA se basa su potencial para incrementar la productividad de unos recursos de agua dulce escasos con el objetivo de mejorar los medi os de subsistencia y reducir la presión sobre los recursos naturales, lo que tiene particular importancia en los países propensos a la sequía de África occidental donde la escasez de agua, la seguridad alimentaria y la degradación medioambiental son cuestiones prioritarias para los responsables políticos. Los sistemas irrigados, llanuras anegables y los fondos de los valles interiores se han identificado como los tres principales ambientes objetivo para la IIA en África occidental. Se ofre cen numerosos ejemplos de las prácticas y limitaciones presentes y del potencial para el desarrollo de la IIA. También se repasan los conceptos de los análisis económicos de la IIA y se ofrece una visión general de los institutos y redes de investigación a nivel regional e internacional y sus mandatos en relación a la IIA. Los factores clave para la adaptación con éxito de la IIA –la participación de las partes interesadas y el apoyo para el desarrollo local, un enfoque integral y multisecto rial de la IIA y una mejor gestión y red de contactos en relación a los conocimientos– indican el camino a seguir y se recogen en una propuesta para el desarrollo de la IIA en África occidental.
