Synopsis (short abstract) The third fact sheet in the Save and Grow series presents the key points of the Quezungual Slash-and-Mulch Agroforestry System, or QSMAS in Honduras. The system builds up soil nutrient stocks, and produces maize yields double those of traditional shifting cultivation.It reduces the time needed for land preparation, prevents soil erosion, and improves the supply and quality of water for downstream consumers. Many ‘slash-and-mulch’ farmers have diversified production, primarily into home ga rdens and livestock. The system enhances ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, and reduces methane emissions.

    This note on the Machobane system is based on information gathered by an FAO Investment Centre mission which visited Lesotho in July 1996 on behalf of the Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, to prepare the ground for the formulation of a Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Programme for possible IFAD financing. Observations of farmers attitudes and behaviour as well as relevant socio-economic data were collected in February 1996 in several villages of two Districts i n Lesotho and are presented.
